 Add Your Voice for Israel
Please join me in calling on the Presbyterian Church to vote against divesting from companies doing business with Israel at their General Assembly this month. Divestment only pushes us further from a two-state solution that will allow both Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace side-by-side. -Rabbi Morris Allen |

Host a Biker
This Sunday, June 17 at 10 am at Beth Jacob is a meeting for Host Families, people considering being Host Families, or those who would like info about going on a 1-day bike ride to Redwing with the Hazon Cyclists on Sunday, July 15!
This summer, Hazon is offering opportunities for people across the US and Israel to "grab life by the handlebars" and join one of 4 Jewish environmental bike rides. The most ambitious ride is the 10-week Cross-USA ride from Seattle, WA to Washington, DC. The half-way point of the Cross-USA ride is right here in St. Paul! Beth Jacob and the St. Paul JCC are working together on learning and volunteer programs for the riders; more on that later. Now, we are looking for host families to provide a soft bed, a hot shower, and a warm Minnesota welcome to a road-weary cyclist from Thursday afternoon, July 12 - Sunday morning, July 15. Contact Beth Gendler at the St. Paul JCC to volunteer!

Adopt a Survivor Program
Talmud Torah Minneapolis announced today that it is seeking Holocaust survivors for their successful Adopt a Survivor program.
The program, now in its fourth year, allows a Holocaust survivor to share his/her life experiences and personal journey with a teen "adopter." The idea is that based on the time spent together, the teen will "adopt" the survivor's story and tell it to others. All teen participants in the program make a pledge to share their story at the 100th Commemoration of the Liberation of the Camps at the Holocaust Memorial in 2045, thus ensuring that it will be passed on to future generations. The students visit their partners at least once a month after school, as well as attend a Talmud Torah class that provides them with historical context about the Holocaust and the impact it had (and still has) on people's lives. At the end of the program, students create a special presentation and will have developed a personal relationship that will last for the rest of their lives.
"The bonds that are formed through these relationships are truly remarkable," said Susie Chalom, Executive Director of Talmud Torah Minneapolis. "Our students learn so much about the Holocaust from those who have experienced it first hand, while forming life long bonds with their partner. It is an experience that is not easily forgotten, or one that will be available much longer."
For the purposes of the program, Talmud Torah is interested in persons of Jewish descent who survived Nazi Germany, or a Nazi-occupied country between 1933-1945. You need not have been in a camp or ghetto to participate. Survivors must be able to commit to a once-a-month visit with their "adopter" between late October through March of 2012-2013. If you are interested please contact Sylvia Fine at sylfine@gmail.com or 612-922-9206.

Are you a Match?
A man, who, in every other way is a healthy and fit 62 year old, has been dealing with two difficult forms of cancer. After responding well to his treatment for Multiple Myeloma, he has recently been diagnosed with Leukeumia, a rare side-effect of the chemotherapy. He will need a stem cell transplant, and the stem cell center at Stanford University hopes to find a close match within the next few weeks. In this patient's case, it is likely that a match would have Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. However, donors with all possible backgrounds are needed for the international registry.
Donating stem cells is simple, and absolutely harmless to the donor. If you want to see if you're a close match who might be able to help this patient (and/or anyone else worldwide who might need a stem cell transplant), you can sign up for the worldwide registry at http://marrow.org.
Once you receive your cheek swab kit, you will swab your inner cheek and mail the swab off to be registered in the worldwide pool of stem cell donors. To qualify to register, you must be age 18-60 and in good health.
This diagnosis is still new, but in order for this patient to have the best shot at beating Leukemia, he will move quickly into treatment. Please consider joining the registry and sharing this request with others, particularly within the Jewish community. If you are not a match, you could save the life of someone in a similar situation.
