Summer's Here to Stay, Folks! |
July 2011

Greetings!
We're about halfway through the summer of 2011, and it has brought a lot of wonderful changes to HomeLife Academy! This edition of the HLA Newsletter will update you on what's going on with us, and offer a few hints on what's going to happen in the future, as well as give some advice on making this summer educational and fun!

New Staff Members! (Well, sorta.... )
This summer, HomeLife Academy has added two new positions to its staff, and providentially received a two for one deal!
The first position is for a Communications Coordinator. It is this person's responsibility to manage HLA's Facebook page and compile and send all newsletters, among other duties. HLA is also developing a blog that you will be seeing information about soon. To that end, HomeLife Academy has hired Katie Johnson. Katie graduated from HomeLife Academy in 2006, and then from Union University with a degree in English Literature in 2010. Now, the next part gets interesting. HLA's long-time high school guidance counselor, Karen Johnson, had always wished to work for the homeschool community in a greater capacity, but the timing had not been right. However, this summer after many discussions and much prayer, it was determined that now was the time for Karen to re-enter the homeschool community full time. Wearing both the senior high guidance counselor and administrative assistant hats for HLA, Karen is eager to enhance, equip and support HLA families and administration. Both Johnson ladies are more than excited to be a part of HomeLife Academy, and stand ready and willing to be of service to the homeschooling community. If you have any questions for them, please don't hesitate to contact them at karen@homelifeacademy.com and katie@homelifeacademy.com. |

Camp Stay-at-Home
By Maureen Hegarty

Summer camps, mega theme parks, and kid-friendly resorts have turned family vacations into expensive and exhausting endeavors. Whether you need to recoup from your travels or you're opting to spend the summer months close to home, you can help your child enjoy a fun-filled vacation right in her own backyard.
Start with these ideas, then let your child's imagination take over.
- Encourage playing dirty.
Pull out old play clothes, set off a piece of the yard that is "his" (far from your prized roses), and let him dig into the earth. Set up a fence around his piece of the yard using sticks connected by lengths of thick string.
Depending on your child's personality, he may want to set up a construction site, build a fort, search for treasure, or plant his own garden (carrot tops, green beans, and sunflower seeds are easy first-time gardening projects). Let him decorate his section of the yard with colored rocks, pictures, and signs painted on planks of wood. - Let nature inspire you.
Bring paints, glitter, glue, and imaginations outside. Plan several summer projects with your child, from scenic paintings that take an afternoon to crafts that take several days to complete. In addition to using her creativity, nature-inspired projects also offer your child opportunities to observe and learn about science.
Make a sun catcher:
- Collect flowers and leaves of different colors and shapes.
- Press the materials between the pages of a book for a few days until they dry out.
- Together, arrange the pressed flowers and leaves in a sandwich bag along with glitter and bits of tissue paper. Leave spaces between the materials (so the plastic will stick together when heated).
- Place the bag between two sheets of aluminum foil and press the foil with a warm iron.
- When you peel away the foil, you'll have a sealed bag that your child can trim into a circle or other shape.
- Poke a hole in the top, attach a piece of thread, and hang in a sunny window.

*** Time to Renew! (If you have not done so already) ***
It's time to renew your registration for the 2011-2012 school year!
We set your file to "Pending Re-enrollment" (formerly called Inactive) in order to allow you to re-enroll for the new school year after you update your student's grade levels. Now, this "Pending Re-Enrollment" status is NOT a "withdrawn" status. We use the "Pending Re-Enrollment" status for administrative purposes. You may still post grades and do everything else in the online grade reporting system. But your student(s) will not be officially re-enrolled for the 2011/2012 school year until you go to Member Login and Re-Enroll.
|
Please login to your account and follow the instructions to "re-enroll" for the new year. Don't forget to update your student's grade levels. Once you click "re-enroll" you will be prompted to select a payment option. If you pay online with a credit/debit card you will receive a Confirmation of Enrollment and a Teacher Verification via email within about 24 hours and your family status will be changed back to "Active." If you select to pay by check or money order your account goes to a "Pending Payment" status. NOTE: It does not change to Active until payment is received.

A final word on the heat.....
When it gets too hot to do anything, HLA family, remember this:
