Encourage your student to love reading and writing! A foundation will be built for higher level English success. We will be studying "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

This book is an example of classic children's literature with a solid message of developing and using your special talents.

We will be exploring sentence structure and the use of descriptive nouns, adjectives, and adverbs in order to give your student the best foundation possible for successful writing.

We will be working on other creative writing styles such as directions, newspaper-style writing, and journal writing. We will begin our study of poetry with couplets, haikus and quatrains.

6-8 Grade Creative Writing Class
We will be reading the approachable Charles Dickens book, Oliver Twist. Students will enjoy reading of the trials of a young English boy while also being introduced to one of the greatest authors in British history. They will learn of Dickens' life, and be given an overview of British culture and history at the time of the book's setting.

We will deepen our study on how to write
descriptive and properly formatted essays,
and will write extensively. Class will also include a basic grammar review and poetry study.

Writing and Literature for High School

Grades 9-12
Limit 10 students

This is a class to build a foundation in writing expository essays required for high school coursework. Using an anthology of American Literature poetry and short stories, students will start from the basics of paragraphs and perfect skills through a college-level essay. They will receive a broad overview of selected American authors, including Mark Twain and Henry David Thoreau. A special study will include an in-depth look into Nathaniel Hawthorne's life and works. Also included will be various creative writing exercises for a well-rounded course, as well as some basic ACT preparation, particularly for the English section of the test.

Katie will do all grading and will send papers home for your records.

$125 per semester
$25 non-refundable deposit due upon registering; $100 balance due at first class.

Katie has had 12 years piano instruction, has taught for 8 years, and is very patient and enthusiastic. Katie will provide your student with a recital each year, a treasure box for motivation, and options for summer lessons.

Katie offers the parent a variety of lesson time options and a sweet spirit when working with your child.
