You Can't Get an Education From School Books
One good way to see
the difference between school books and real books is to examine the
different customs that separate librarians from school teachers.
Librarians are the custodians of real books. And school teachers are
the custodians of school books. Somewhere in the differences we're
going to find a key to unlock the secret of the war between education
and schooling.
To begin with, the libraries I've visited have always
been comfortable and quiet, places where you can read instead of just
pretending to read. Read more...

Unit Studies Made Easy
On any given day we are almost unaware that we are learning a number of
different subjects. For example, when we go shopping we are utilizing
nutrition, math, economics, and communication skills, yet the process
flows under the shopping concept. Unit studies are based on this idea.
They incorporate a number of different subjects at the same time and
provide an overarching concept to tie the information together. This
approach mimics "real life" learning.
The unit studies approach is designed to give both broad and
in-depth understandings of subjects. It is believed that when children
go into such depth, and spend a generous amount of time on each theme;
their retention of the subject is higher than in traditional methods.
Most unit studies include experiential, hands-on learning along
with the inclusion of subjects such as science, math, geography, art,
music, history, language, literature, drama, and creative movement.
Since the central focus is on one theme, all core subjects are
integrated together based on that particular theme. Read more...

WHAT ABOUT SOCIALIZATION?
Socialization has been the main criticism leveled at home schooling for many years. "Aren't
you afraid that if you don't let them hang around kids their own age
all the time they won't be properly socialized?" One might answer the
question with, "No. I'm afraid that if I let them hang around kids
there own age all the time they WILL BE socialized!" Read more...

Solid Ground in Turbulent Times...
Many of you are already feeling the difficulty of this current crisis. Others of you will be touched by it in the months ahead. We want you to know we are here to pray and help anyway we can. Fortunately, HLA operates on a cash basis and does not depend on credit for daily operations. Still, we are also tightening our budget straps and trimming where we can in an effort to prepare, in case things gets worse. In all of this we are reminded to trust the Lord and lean not on our own understanding. He alone is the solid ground in turbulent times.

Over the last decade, researchers, professionals, parents, the media,
and many others have asked repeatedly: How do homeschooled students
turn out? Can a homeschool graduate get into college or get a job? How
do they fit into society? Are they good citizens? Are they happy? Read more...

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2
"Therefore,
whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is
pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any
excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on
these things." Philippians 4:8
