THE CASE AGAINST HIGH STAKES TESTING

The materials selected for this page make the case against relying on test scores to make critical educational decisions about students or schools - or what is called high stakes testing. Common examples include retaining a child in grade or withholding a students high-school diploma solely on the basis their score on a test, or relying on test scores to determine whether a teacher or school should be sanctioned or rewarded.

HLA Continues to Grow!
Celebrating five years and giving credit to God!

When God inspired the vision for HLA a little over five years ago April and I had no idea what it would become today. We prayed and stepped out in faith with the following mission statement: "We believe God gives every child unique and wonderful gifts to use for His Glory and Honor. Our mission is to inspire and equip parents to help develop those gifts." (Maybe our daughter, Ellie, has the hidden gift of helping answer the HLA phone!) Now going into our sixth year serving families we are delighted and give all the credit to God.

We pray HomeLife Academy will do it's part to help you toward this goal over the next five years as you discover and develop those God-given gifts in your children.
In Christ, david

New School Year!

RE-ENROLL WITH A FEW SIMPLE CLICKS...

**If you pre-registered for 08/09 you will not
receive the reminder on May 16th and following.**

May 16th marks the beginning of the new academic school year, 2008/2009!! Keep in mind this "new beginning" refers to the new administrative year, not necessarily your new teaching year. You may still finish the previous school year. Take the time you need! And you may begin the 08/09 anytime as well, provide you "attend" at least 180 days in the course of the year.

In order to start re-enrollment the following steps are taken.

We set your file to "inactive" in order to allow you to re-enroll for the new school year after you update your student's educational plan and grade levels. Now, this "inactive" status is NOT a "withdrawn" status. We use the "inactive" status for administrative purposes.

However, church-related law does require every family to re-enroll each new school year in order to satisfy the compulsory attendance laws. HLA must report all names and addresses of students who do not re-enrolled each year.

Please login to your account after May 16th and follow the instructions to "re-enroll" for the new year. Don't forget to
update your student's educational plan and grade levels. Once you click "re-enroll" you will be prompted to select a payment option. If you pay online with a credit/debit card you will immediately receive a Confirmation of Enrollment and a Teacher Verification through email. Your family status will be changed back to "Active." If you select to pay by check or money order your account goes to "Pending Payment" status. NOTE: It does not change to Active until payment is received. Once again, you may begin and end your "teaching" year at any time but we continue to encourage you to think of education as ongoing where we building into our children a "Heart for Learning."

We're happy to announce that the enrollment fees remain the same this year. You may choose to mail payment or pay with credit card after you click "re-enroll."

NOTES:
  • You DO NOT have to have final grades submitted in order to re-enroll now.
  • You DO NOT have to have your educational plan all picked out for the new year in order to re-enroll now. (Because you are an approved HLA teacher we trust you to choose good books during the summer.) You may login later to submit your new ed plan if you would like.
Again, thank you so much for allowing us to serve you and your family! We pray that the Father of our hearts will be glorified in our families and in the upcoming school year.

The next reminder to Re-enroll will come on May 16th.

**If you pre-registered for 08/09 you will not
receive the reminder on May 16th and following.**

The SCHOOL of ROTE MEMORY...

Excerpt from A Heart for Learning,
by David Parkerson

"rote (rot) noun 1. A memorizing process using routine or repetition, often without full attention or comprehension: learn by rote. 2. Mechanical routine."

I still remember when I first learned about rote memory, our shortest-term capacity for storing bits of info. It was in Mrs. Harwell's 9th grade biology class. "There are three types of memory," she would tell us. "Long term is forever. Short term is for months or years. But rote memory is only for days. ' In one ear and out the other.' That's rote memory." This was just the ammo I needed! I could not wait to get home that day with proof, proof that all this data I was being forced to swallow was useless because I would soon forget most of it. Surely my parents would recognize the futility of it all and dismiss school from my life.

On the bus, I thought of all those tests that I had taken, and all that remained to take; tests on capitals and significant dates, elements and parts of speech. I thought of how it was all routine and repetition, often without full attention or comprehension in order to accomplish one goal, pass the test so I could keep everyone happy. "Who cares if I know it forever or even for a few years? It's the test on Friday that counts for or against me." I pled my case to the highest court in the house, but there was no reduction in my sentence. I had to go back to the old grindstone the very next day, back to memorizing the definitions of those words in bold, because that was what "learning" was all about.

That was before my parents became home educators. Soon my brother would be rescued from a downward spiral. Born with a learning disability (so the label read) the one-size-fits-all school of rote memory did not work. He was nearly suicidal...at twelve! As my parents ventured into the world of home education, I watched Tyler take part in a whole new (or old?) way to learn: The Suction Principle.
