NEWS FROM NEEDIEST KIDS

March 2012

Skyrocketing Demand for Services

In the first semester of the current school year, our partner schools have spent nearly as much money on providing students with basic essentials as they had during the entire previous school year. That translates into an unprecedented 107% increase in critical services provided!

Fairfax County Neediest Kids Coordinator, Amy Parmentier, said "Many of these families have been just barely hanging on for the past few years. Now there is nothing left to hang on to. We're so grateful that Neediest Kids is able to help support so many of our low-income students."

At a recent meeting of the Neediest Kids Coordinators from each of our ten partner school districts, every coordinator noted that the numbers of homeless children they are seeing has dramatically increased this year.

The Loudoun County Coordinator Wendall Fisher added, "Families are doubling and tripling up in small apartments. Too many young people are couch surfing at a different friend's each night because they lack a permanent home."

"The need for assistance can be overwhelming," sighed Chris Lalik, Neediest Kids Coordinator for the DC Public Charter Schools. "We're just thankful Neediest Kids is there to help."

Neediest Kids is thrilled to announce that we are the new host charity for the local stop of the PGA Nationwide Tour. The Neediest Kids Championship Presented by Under Armour will take place October 1-7 at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms.

"The Nationwide Tour welcomes Neediest Kids to the family of PGA TOUR host organizations," said Nationwide Tour president Bill Calfee.

Tournament week will feature a four-day tournament with some of the word's best professional golfers, multiple Pro-Am's, a kids clinic, a high school invitational, the Executive Women's Breakfast and Clinic, the Champions party, Kids Day, and other fun-filled social events.

A Quick Story

"The Neediest Kids Bridge to Success program has assisted our students and really boosted their morale. It has allowed parents to feed their children better meals and has taken away some of the worry of the parents and the children and just allowed them to be children."
