A Successful Back to School Breakfast
 | |
Board Chair Scott Brickman, Comcast SportsNet's Chick Hernandez, and MCPS Superintendent, Dr. Joshua Starr
|
Dr. Joshua Starr, the new Superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools, was the outstanding keynote speaker at our Back to School breakfast held September 15 at Congressional Country Club. Dr. Starr spoke eloquently about the challenges faced by so many of our students and how community partnerships are vital to providing all our children with an excellent education that will prepare them for the future.
Chick Hernandez from Comcast SportsNet, served as our delightful Master of Ceremonies and movingly explained that he was once a "neediest kid" and that's why he so strongly supports Neediest Kids.
We thank Houghton Mifflin for being our Breakfast Sponsor as well as Joshua Starr and Chick Hernandez for enabling us to honor our school partners, retail partners, and many corporate and individual supporters at such a fun-filled Back to School Breakfast

Why Your Support Matters
A high school senior was struggling throughout the year with homelessness, illness, caring for a baby, and trying to complete her schoolwork. Through Neediest Kids, we were able to help her buy food and clothing for her and the baby. Neediest Kids also paid her graduation expenses so that she could walk proudly across the stage. Thanks to Neediest Kids we now have a successful young lady who is stepping into the adult world armed with her high school diploma.

An elementary school student, his younger sister and their mother fled a domestic violence situation. Eventually, they were able to get housing, but the student lost his glasses in the process of the upheaval. From the time we walked in the door of Hour Eyes for the initial appointment until the time that we returned for the glasses, we were treated with dignity and kindness. All of the staff was extremely professional and courteous. The student is now proudly wearing his new glasses and is able to see the board and perform successfully in the classroom.
