Hold a School Supply Drive and Make a Difference in the Life of an At-Risk Student

Do you remember the thrill of having a brand new notebook on the first day at school?  Do you recall the excitement of cracking open a box of freshly sharpened pencils in your new classroom?

The next school year is just two months away, and you can help low-income students across the DC Metro Area feel the pride of tossing a new red backpack over their shoulders or whipping out their new crayons to draw a picture that shows how they spent their summer vacation.

Please, hold a school supply drive at work, at school, with your club or faith-based organization, or in your neighborhood. Collect new paper, pens, protractors, and other products. Neediest Kids will help get these essential supplies to children in need, children right in your own backyard.

BB & T Employees Create Personal Care Kits for Fairfax Students in Need
Mountain View School
Staff from BB&T, Mountain View High School, and Neediest Kids celebrate a donation of personal care kits.

Toiletries, including shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, and soap, are often difficult to obtain when you don't have enough money to make ends meet. You can get clothes at thrift stores and food at a local food bank, but personal care items are harder to find.  When employees at two BB&T Fairfax branches learned of this need, they decided to put together 200 personal care kits to donate to low-income students through BB&T's Lighthouse Project.

Neediest Kids thanks BB&T for their generosity.

Why Your Donations Matter

The District of Columbia Charter Schools Neediest Kids coordinator said, "There is so much need here in DC, and Neediest Kids is one of the best services in Washington. They help our students without fifty-five people needing to sign off on something."

He added, "I once saw a mother cry with joy when she received a $100 purchase order to buy clothes for her children at Target."
