Exodus 30:12-14a "The Lord said to Moses: You yourself are to speak to the Israelites; 'You shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, given in order that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you. You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you.'" (New Revised Standard Version)
For many of us, Friday is the end of our work week or the end of the school week. Usually, by mid-morning, we're daydreaming about our weekend plans. Maybe we're going out to eat, taking in a concert or movie. Maybe it's a gathering of friends, or a birthday party that has you eagerly anticipating your free time. Recreation is good for personal renewal and connecting with those people who are closest to us.
But as we approach the weekend, how many of us are eagerly anticipating hearing God's word at worship on Saturday night or Sunday morning? It could be argued that Sabbath-keeping is a lost art, a remnant of days gone by. As school and work let out on Friday afternoon - how many of us say, "it's only a day or so and I'll get to hear of God's loving promises in my life?" The Sabbath, a time for worshipping God, was a gift of God for the people of God. Sabbath keeping is a moment to pause, reflect and reappropriate our lives in light of God's promises.
As we consider what it means to 'live like you were dying,' our priorities will be rearranged. As you consider the reality that life is limited, that the clock is ticking, consider the following:
- God gifts me with life everyday - how do I give God's love for me back to Him?
- God has put people in my life - family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, employers, employees, etc. - how do I express God's love for them?
- Time is precious - how can I rearrange my priorities to reflect God's love?
