What is Restorative Yoga?

Restorative Yoga creates a deep state of relaxation safely using props. Prepare to slow down to heal & nurture the body & mind. Nourish the body as we practice most of the poses on the floor while being mindful of our thoughts and emotions. Experience a kind of peaceful serenity that leaves you with less negative emotions, less tension, and with more compassion and grace.  Restorative yoga uses yoga props to manipulate the autonomic nervous system into stimulating the parasympathetic nervous. The yoga props open and close the body to create ease. Ease arouses empowering emotions-love, compassion,  joy, bliss-which allow the body to relax and heal. Restorative yoga has the ability to counter high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. Restorative yoga is the antidote to stress!

What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating tantric practice that helps calm the mind. You are in a state of "conscious sleep". Yoga Nidra is practiced in a supported position resting on the floor or seated.  Props help to support the body physically to allow deep relaxation to occur. You may choose to explore Yoga Nidra for many reasons: deep relaxation, elimination of stress, solving personal problems, resolving or neutralizing trauma, entering deep meditation or assistance in unraveling such questions as Who Am I? Yoga Nidra  in essence is a practice of self inquiry derived from ancient yoga teachings.

Please bring your yoga props to the workshop. The hosting studio, will provide props as they are available. But, one can never have too many props while in a restorative yoga pose! Bring 2 blankets, 2 blocks, any bolsters you'd like to use and a eyebag.

    President's Corner

Greetings dear sweet yogis! I hope your Thanksgiving was filled with love and gratitude and that you carry that with you for many months to come. With Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and a New Year right around the corner most of us are busy, decorating, baking, shopping, socializing, sending cards, wrapping presents, practicing yoga, meditating, etc. It certainly can be a busy time of year to JUST BE. I hope you will take time to BE with us this Saturday for Restorative Yoga & Yoga Nidra. This has almost become an annual December event. Last years Restorative Yoga & Yoga Nidra event was just amazing and I can't imagine this year being anything less. Give yourself the gift of BEing with us this Saturday.

Prior to the event we'll be holding our very first meeting of the new YTOC Board of Directors. Many of the new board members will be in attendance, for both board meeting and the event that follows. Come meet the new board members! Board meetings are always open to all members, so let me know if you are interested in joining us and I'll send you the details. Also, if you have an idea for an event, would like to present, host, or just plain have something to share with me about YTOC please let me know. Be on the lookout for a survey requesting your input soon. I want to know how we can provide more benefits to our members, and where we are hitting or missing the mark.

As yogi's we do make a difference in peoples lives every day. I was brought to tears last night by a student who arrived almost 15 minutes late to class. She peeked her head in the door seeking my permission to come in, and I waved to her in. She is dealing with some health challenges and will be having a surgical procedure later this week. After class she came up and thanked me for inviting her in so late to class. She told me that she just had to do yoga tonight and that this might be her last time in class for a while depending on how her procedure goes. I had read a meditation from "Love & Bliss - Meditations on the Art of Living" by Yogi Amrit Desai at the end of class and she told me that it was what she would focus on while her procedure was being performed. Here is that meditation.

The flow of energy in my body is a sacred dance.
I observe the miracle of wisdom my body demonstrates.
I adore it.
I love it.
My love and appreciation grow many fold.

My body is not something I exploit, violate or ignore,
but a living temple of God.
When I enter my body through the door of consciousness,
nothing in the field of my awareness remains the same.

Yoga effects us in so many ways. This is one of those "off the mat" special moments that helps me affirm my path.

Yours in Service,
Shari Turney

PS.  Thank you Swami  Dharmananda for your presentation to us in November!  We are very grateful to have you here with us in Colorado sharing your wisdom.
