Prepare for a wonderful hike, along with yoga and meditation.  August is usually our summer social event and this year we are celebrating it by traveling to the mountain home of John and Jeanne Adams of Inner Connections Yoga.

Even though our event this month is being held at the home of John and Jeanne Adams and not at the studio location, we wanted to highlight Inner Connections Yoga.  It is owned by and is the brainchild of the Adams.

The mission of Inner Connections Yoga, Spa & Wellness Center is to provide a place of peace, tranquility, and relaxation conducive to reducing stress and creating balance in life by focusing on the mind-body-spirit connection.

They are the only Yoga, Spa & Wellness Center in Castle Rock, Colorado and the only studio in Douglas County qualified to certify instructors for over nine years. Combining a peaceful and beautiful environment with a highly trained, friendly staff of experts in their respective fields, they ensure you a wonderful and relaxing wellness experience.

Corner column will appear in the September issue.

My two years as YTOC president are quickly coming to a close.  It has been a mixture of many things, but most of all, the pleasure of serving the wonderful members of our yoga community.

We are currently looking for new board members to fill vacant positions.   Contact me at president@ytoc.org if you are interested.

All members will soon be receiving a special notification/invitation to our annual meeting arriving in the mail, so do watch for it!

Harmony Yoga Floods During Recent Rains

When yoga teacher Lania Ross opened Harmony Yoga Studio on Wednesday morning, July 13, 2011, she found some water spots on the floor.

The yoga studio, located in the Cherry Creek Valley, had received torrential rains the previous evening.

Owner (and YTOC board member) Michelle Corriell discovered the "water spots" were actually signs that water had poured under the back door, under the floating wood floor in the kitchen/tea space, through the hallways, and under a large portion of the main studio's cork floor. The water had completely soaked the carpet of the treatment room shared by a massage therapist and acupuncturists.

Michelle was dismayed and heartbroken, as the studio had recently been renovated after a water disaster in January when the 40-year-old main plumbing pipe burst. The studio endured a ten-day closure while the workers jack hammered a six-foot deep and thirty-foot long trench.

The new floors would have to be ripped out and replaced once again.

A property disaster company was employed, and soon twenty high-powered fans and dehumidifiers began the drying out process. The damaged floors had to be torn out, and the underfloor allowed to dry out four more days in order to avoid mold. Mold can be toxic anywhere, but especially in a yoga studio where healthy space is needed to breathe deeply.

The closest store with the identical cork flooring was in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The quickest they could promise delivery would take nearly a week. Michelle and her husband decided to pick up the cork in person and began a 14-hour round trip to Albuquerque.

Michelle's husband spent Monday and Tuesday on hands and knees, installing the newly-acquired cork flooring, while the floor installers worked in the tea space and hallways. By late Tuesday evening, Harmony Yoga was back open for business, a long six days since the flooding.

Michelle offers, "It was a lesson in surrender, in patience, and in breathing through what I could not change. There were definite moments of wanting to give up, to run away, and to ask 'Why me, again?' "

"Both my husband and I kept going. It was a test of endurance and inner strength. I am grateful that I have tools as a yogini to help me trudge through life's struggles, and I am so utterly grateful for the amazing yogis in our community and YTOC."

Michelle added this message to her community: "Thank you for every email, facebook message, and voice message. Every single one created a support network "like a bridge over troubled waters" when I needed it most. "  ~In gratitude, Michelle Corriell
