The Art of Mala Making
Seen malas being worn or used by others, but wondered what they were about? Ever wanted to make your own mala? Then this is the workshop for you.
Malas are a string of beads used as a tool to aid in meditation and prayer, similiar to a Catholic rosary. Traditionally, malas have 108 beads (+1 for the "guru" bead, so 109 total), though half malas of 54 beads, and quarter malas of 27 beads are commonly used as well.
Malas are especially useful in the practice of japa meditation, or the repetition of mantra, as it helps to focus the mind and track the number of mantra repetitions. With consistent use, malas begin to build up power and become a personal sacred object on the path of spiritual transformation.
Malas can be made with crystal, seed, wood, shell, glass or even plastic beads, each having its own energetic properties and gifts to enhance one's experience.
Please note that beads will NOT be available for sale at the workshop, so please purchase your beads beforehand. Also, choose embroidery thread that matches/compliments your beads to finish up the tassel.
When choosing a gemstone or bead, spend a few minutes holding different ones, even with the eyes closed, and see if there is one that seems to resonate more with you than others. Feel the weight, energy and color of the bead.... most often the gems "choose" us according to what we need in our life.
There are several local bead shops with a great variety to choose from (letitbeadcolorado.com and desertgemsinc.com, as well as Michael's and Hobby Lobby). Prices vary depending on the stone. 8mm sized beads are recommended, anything smaller can be difficult to thread, as the holes are rather small.
The thread for stringing the malas WILL be provided.
Supplies to purchase PRIOR to the program:
- 108 + 1 beads (109 total)
- embroidery thread

PRESIDENT'S CORNER
| | |
Greetings,
WooHoo! I don't know about you, but I'm pretty darned excited about those tulip leaves poking up through the softening crust of soil and the twitter of birds heard as I drink my morning cup of tea.
Once again, Mother Nature bids us to pay attention to the awakening changes around and about us.
I love how the practice of Yoga beckons using the same way~"Notice this, here, now...and let yourself be delighted".
Have you been feeling the stirrings of that awakening energy, that invitation to pay attention?
Do you find yourself suddenly more aware of your surroundings and of the "web of life" connecting you to everything and everyone within your sphere of experience?
Once again, I find myself drawn toCarl Jung's concept of "synchronicity"~the coming together of two seemingly unrelated events or circumstances, unexplained by cause and effect, that have meaning for the observer.
That second part of the sentence is important: "meaning for the observer", for synchronicity requires the human element; the one who witnesses and finds in the experience significance, relationship, an "anonymous gift from God".
Those not paying attention perhaps simply chalk up such experiences to "coincidence".
Too bad...they're missing out on what has been called by some"glimpses into the creative mind of the Universe".
The question is, are you paying attention?
Deepak Chopra takes the concept further: he says that, by bringing
intention to our attention, we more consciously step into the flow of Grace and our power to attract that which supports and evolves us (what he refers to as "synchrodestiny").
We have all experienced, in our practice on the mat, that where we place our focused attention, energy flows, and when we add to that the intention of healing and transformation, transformation does indeed happen.
Applied quantum physics, right there on our yoga mats!
As we move into Spring, celebrating and honoring the interconnectedness of the Universe, receiving the gifts of beauty and rebirth all around us, let's remember to remain open and pay attention as we receive the gifts of synchronicity in our lives which affirm our shared journey in the flow of Grace.
Bloom On!
Namaste'
