  PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Excerpts from Jeanne's remarks to guests at

YTOC's 30th Anniversary Celebration

January 29, 2011

The Yoga Teachers of Colorado began in May 1980 as the shared vision of a small group of beautiful, dedicated yoginis who had spent two very intense weeks together in a teacher certification program with Mukunda Stiles, who was at that time the director of the Sacramento Holistic Health Institute in California. Mukunda had been invited to Colorado to offer this training program by Ina Hambrick (my first teacher back in 1974).

Twelve yoginis--twelve very diverse backgrounds, ages, yoga practices and teaching methodologies--came together and discovered their unity in diversity, the gift of their capacity to support one another while learning from each other~and together they created a vision that other yoga teachers in the state of Colorado would derive great benefit it they, too, could experience this same synergistic energy and sense of professional and spiritual community.

Today, YTOC has grown to more than 150 individual and studio members but it has remained true to that original vision of unity in diversity.  That is, indeed, its greatest strength.

We are so honored to have with us tonight many of the key players in the birth of this organization.  Those unable to be present with us tonight include: Carol Driste-Addey,

Claudette Rue, Peggen Bondreau, Jean Welder, Alice Rasmussen, Katherine Detre (who just

turned 100 years old!) and Mardi Erdman who died in 1994.

The following Founding Members ARE here tonight: Judy Hein, Shar Lee, Myrna Bottone,

Jo Murphy and Stephanie Taylor.

As soon as YTOC was formed, several incredibly talented, energetic and visionary individuals came on board and immediately stepped into Board positions, began presenting programs and soon actively represented not only YTOC, but yoga in Colorado in the growing Unity in Yoga organization, the forerunner of Yoga Alliance (formed some 18 years later).

YTOC hosted the first Unity in Yoga conference, held in Colorado Springs.  This committed service was given at a time when yoga was not yet acknowledged in the broader community as a credible wellness practice (and no computers, answering machines or cell phones existed!)  This was one dedicated group of individuals!

Present with us tonight from this "YTOC's 1st Year" membership are: Patricia Hansen,

Susan Flanders, Janice Brooks and Ina Hambrick.

Time does not allow us to recognize all those who have offered of themselves and kept this group going, but as representatives of the many, would all Past Presidents here with us this evening please stand: Judy Hein, Pat Hansen, Shar Lee, Myrna Bottone, Susan Flanders, Hansa, Joe Legae, Suzanne Matthews, Erin Mathiason and Karin Bustamante.

In closing, I thank each of you present here tonight for celebrating with us YTOC's journey these past 30 years.

I call upon each of you--as teacher members, friends, future Board Members and program presenters, brave and dedicated studio owners and lovers of yoga--to dedicate yourselves to taking this shining gem we call YTOC into all that it can be going forward.

Thank you and Namaste'.

MANY THANKS ANGELA KLJUNICH AND ALL THOSE WHO HELPED MAKE THIS ANNIVERSARY

 CELEBRATION SUCH A WONDERFUL SUCCESS!
