President's Message |
|
Dear YTOC Members,
It seems the holidays have passed in a flash and we are quickly moving into February. Our Nation has a new President, the days are starting to get longer, change is inevitable.... or is it? During this topsy turvy time is there something, perhaps amidst the change, that is changeless? This beautiful practice of Yoga is our vehicle, our tool, for the investigation of this very question. The simple recognition or reconnection to the changeless can put all of the burly whirly hectic stuff in perspective allowing for a collective sigh.
I invite each of us to share our fellowship and continue to bond with our community in celebration of the changeless! This month, we will learn how to share our practice with those less fortunate in our special "Yoga in Prisons" event. And don't forget to view the offerings from our fellow YTOC members and studios. You can see a combined list of events by clicking on the YTOC Events page on the left hand side of the YTOC home page. Help us grow YTOC. Invite your fellow yogis and yoginis to one of our events or just send them our newsletter.
Sincerely, Karin Bustamante YTOC President |

...with Terry Lalley, Carol Sullivan & Erica Bonham
Date: February 8th, 2009
Time: 2:00 -4:00 PM
Location: Denver Whole Yoga
1735 E. 17th Ave. Denver, 80218
Details: Terry Lalley, Erica Bonham, and Carol Sullivan will guide us through a practice similar to what they teach in prison-without any props except yoga mats and without any physical adjustments, since touching is prohibited in prison. They will also talk about opportunities for teaching yoga in Colorado prisons.
Erica, who trained at the Shoshoni/Shambhava School of Yoga, also teaches at the Gathering Place. Erica's aunt Meredith Vaughn, a pillar in the yoga community, helped her first connect to the prison yoga program. Erica says, "It's very humbling to be in that (prison) environment, and still I see such vitality in the women's faces."
Carol, a yoga practitioner for 20 years, trained at the El Dorado/Shambhava School, and has taught yoga for six years at Shamhava's Whole Yoga, gyms, work sites, schools, and at her church. Carol says, "Yoga offers women prisoners a freedom that is sorely needed and vividly experienced. In a prison, there are so many interruptions from loudspeaker announcements to lockdowns, and yet we can always come back to the breath and the freedom inside each of us."
"Of all the classes that I've had the opportunity to teach weekly, the highlight for me, what being a yoga teacher is all about, is my 90 minutes plus with the ladies at the Denver prison," says Terry, who founded the yoga program at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility four years ago. Terry has taught at various Metro Denver sites for more than 13 years. He also teaches at the Jefferson County Men's Jail as well as fitness clubs and Rishi's Crossing.
