Issue: 10 February 2008
President's Message

Have you been surprised, bemused or plagued by the seemingly continual stream of inner commentary emanating from your mind? Yeah, me too.   Patanjali's Yoga Sutras lists a wonderful array of techniques as he points us to the goal; "The restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff is Yoga" Sutra 2 of Chapter 1.  In the practice of Yoga we have many, many wonderful tools to help us investigate our beliefs, assumptions and habits. The next two events will help us gain a better understanding of mind and perhaps experience a sense of what Patanjali meant with Sutra 3 of Chapter 1;"Then the Seer [Self] abides in His own nature."

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Translation and Commentary by Sri Swami Satchidananda.  So, I invite all YTOC members to take full advantage of our upcoming monthly meetings.

Namaste,

Karin Bustamante

UPCOMING YTOC APRIL & MAY 2008 EVENTS

AERIAL YOGA
presented by Josh McGirk
Saturday, April 19, 2008
5:00 - 7:00 pm
at AERIAL DANCE OVER DENVER

*This program is free to members!

This Aerial Yoga workshop will look at classic standing, seated and inverted asanas from a bird's eye view. Using a knot in two large strands of fabric or various aerial dance hand and foot locks, our practice can literally fly. We will also explore using this fabric as a prop to enhance our standing and floor poses.

Benefits of Aerial Yoga would include ease of inverting in poses such as handstands, headstands, scorpion, and forearm balance, more control in standing balance poses, increased upper body strength and general childlike glee in find a place reminiscent of our elementary school playground (without the bullies or drama we normally associate with such things).

Josh McGirk will lead us in the Aerial Yoga Workshop. He received his RYT in January 2007 after four years of study through YogaFit. This education complemented his massage therapy and BS in Biology/Chemistry background. In July 2007, he was trained in Aerial Yoga and was asked to start a program at Aerial Dance Over Denver. He teaches a Vinyasa style class at various gyms across town, as well as a number of Golden Years Yoga classes.

Free to YTOC Members. Non-Members $20.

Jungian Psychology & Yoga

with Bob Bongiavanni

Saturday, May 3rd

1:00 - 3:00 pm

at Rishi's Crossing

*This program is free to members and 20$ if a not member.

Carl Jung was an influential thinker and the founder of analytical psychology. His teachings emphasized the importance of balance and harmony. In 1938 Jung traveled to India. The journey left him inspired, mystified, and deeply changed. From his experience, Jung developed a central concept that was influenced by yoga and the Vedic philosophy - the existence of a transcendent Self at the core of the psyche.

Benefits of Jungian techniques can be especially helpful for people who are struggling to move beyond the early traumas that hinder meditation and manifest somatically in yoga practice.

Bob Bongiovanni has lectured and taught courses on Jungian thought for over 15 years. He is the founder of and principal lecturer at The Jungian Circle, a Denver-based discussion group. He has guest lectured with Jung Societies in Denver and Colorado Springs. For the past 20 years, Bob has applied Jungian concepts to public health issues, including sexuality education and drug prevention. He has a master's degree in community psychology from Regis University and was certified by both the Jung Foundation of Colorado and the Jung Association of Therapists and Teachers. In 2004, he retraced Jung's journey to India.

Acro Yoga with Phil Gust

Sunday, June  8th

1:00-3:00 pm

Yin Yoga Studio

*
This program is free to members and 20$ if a not member.

Acroyoga is yoga with the fun spin of acrobatics mixed in. Graceful, fun and not as hard as it looks, Acroyoga is a great way to get creative with your yoga practice and loosen up. Open your practice with the ease, comfort and the support of a partner. This workshop touches upon all the disciplines that acroyoga offers, combining yoga, acrobatics and Thai Massage.

Benefits of Acroyoga is to bring individuals into a state of union with themselves, with each other, and with the divine. From this place of mutual support the true self can be realized, honored and shared for the benefit of all. Students are requested to have familiarity with yoga. No partner necessary!

Phil Gust has been exploring the various paths of yoga for many years and continues to explore different physical forms of yoga. He has found an immense amount of joy practicing and teaching AcroYoga because of the community that it promotes. The support of this community cultivates courage, trust, and communication, all of which allow for a much deeper opening on many different levels. Phil has learned this first hand, as AcroYoga has been the most powerful tool for teaching Phil how to apply what he's learned on the mat in his every day life.

YTOC Library

Did you know that YTOC has a library, and that we have many great items for you to check out?  If you are a YTOC member and wish to borrow any library item, e-mail Susan Merrill at asanasue@yahoo.com, or make arrangements at one of our meetings.

YTOC now has most of the Back Issues of Yoga Journal from 1990-2001!

We can share back issues with you. For example, maybe you want an in-depth analysis of an asana or a style of yoga you are researching. We can help you locate that issue. You can use this service just as you use the library for renting out video and audio tapes. Please go to the library page of the YTOC website (www.ytoc.org) for a listing of our library materials.
