Healthful Journey Yoga

Issue: 10 February 2008
President's Message

There may be snow on the ground but there is spring in the air or so I felt as the sun was warming my skin. The days are growing just a wee bit longer, inviting us to start exploring the outdoors. And a question buzzes in my head, "Is Yoga the practice of a few sequenced postures only?" It's not a real question because I know that Yoga is unique unto each individual.  The VijñanaBhairava: The Yoga of Delight, Wonder and Astonishment, describes 112 different practices to know Yourself truly.  At the root of this practice we call Yoga is a sense that we are merging with something bigger and grander than our every day one sided point of view.  At YTOC we welcome expressions of Yoga that are unique.  Granted this makes answering, "what is yoga?" a bit more challenging.  Where to start my lecture?  Should I start with the heath benefits of postures or the sense of peace I achieve by working with my body lovingly?  Are they interested in meditation, philosophy perhaps even Yoga Nidra?  Knowing that, explaining Yoga is as simple as describing the feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin J.

Namaste,
Karin Bustamante
YTOC Secretary

UPCOMING YTOC MARCH 2008 EVENT

Laughter Yoga with Katie Brogren

Saturday, March 8th, 3:30 - 5:00 pm

at Pearl Street Yoga

*This program is free to members!

The Laughter Yoga method was developed by Dr. Madan Katria, a family physician from Mumbai, India who started the first Laughter Yoga Club in 1995.  Laughter Yoga is a physical technique that uses a blend of playful, empowering and otherwise "tension-releasing" simple laughter exercises.  Laughter Yoga is a lot of fun and a barrel full of laughs!  Benefits of Laughter Yoga come from a surge of happy hormones that offset stress hormones.  We also experience a large amount of cardiovascular work and we tone the abdomen while practicing Laughter Yoga.  Laughter Yoga can be practiced by all body types and all ages.  People with physical limitations or in wheelchairs are welcome to practice Laughter Yoga.

Katie BrogRan will teach the Laughter Yoga Workshop.  She received her Yoga Teacher Training from Roseanne Frechette and Inner City Yoga.  Katie realized just how much she wanted to help others laugh more, and so she created her own "Lunch Time Laughter Club" and began to teach special Laughter Yoga workshops in the Denver area.  Katie is also a professional dancer and teaches dance to children and adults with Ballet Ariel, Follow My Footsteps Dance Company, and Hannah Kahn Dance Company.

Aerial Yoga with Josh McGirk

Saturday, April 19th, 5:00-7:00 pm

at Aerial Yoga

*This program is free to members!

This Aerial Workshop will look at classic standing, seated and inverted asanas from a bird's eye view.  Using a knot in two large strands of fabric or various aerial dance hand and foot locks, our practice can literally fly.  We will also explore using this fabric as a prop to enhance our standing an floor poses.  Benefits of Aerial Yoga would include ease of inverting in poses such as handstands, headstands, scorpion, and forearm balance.  More control in standing balance poses, increased upper body strength and general childlike glee in finding a place reminiscent of our elementary school playground (without the bullies or drama we normally associate with such things).

Josh McGirk will lead us in the Aerial Yoga Workshop.  He received his RYT January 2007 after four year's study through YogaFit.  This education complimented his massage therapy and BS in Biology/Chemistry background.  In July 2007, he was trained in Aerial Yoga and was asked to start a program a Aerial Dance Over Denver.  He teaches a Vinyasa style class at various gym across town, as well as a number of Golden Years Yoga classes.

YTOC Library

Did you know that YTOC has a library, and that we have many great items for you to check out?  If you are a YTOC member and wish to borrow any library item, e-mail Susan Merrill at asanasue@yahoo.com, or make arrangements at one of our meetings.

YTOC now has most of the Back Issues of Yoga Journal from 1990-2001!

We can share back issues with you. For example, maybe you want an in-depth analysis of an asana or a style of yoga you are researching. We can help you locate that issue. You can use this service just as you use the library for renting out video and audio tapes. Please go to the library page of the YTOC website (www.ytoc.org) for a listing of our library materials.
