United Way to Hold Second Online Auction Fundraiser | |
United Way St. Croix Valley will be running its second online auction throughout June and July. All proceeds generated by this year's auction will be used to support programs that provide basic needs like food and shelter.
Each week from June 6 to July 15, United Way will post new items and services donated by businesses and organizations on eBay. United Way anticipates more than 70 items up for sale over the course of the auction, including a one-week timeshare stay at Christmas Mountain in Wisconsin Dells, Milwaukee Summerfest tickets, Green Bay Packers memorabilia, and a dinner and boat cruise for four on Lake Mallalieu.
You may visit United Way's eBay page directly at myworld.ebay.com/unitedwaystcroixvalley to see what is currently for sale or visit www.unitedwaystcroix.org and click the link on the homepage.
United Way's inaugural online auction was held last summer and raised more than $3,500 for local programs. United Way is hoping this year's auction will raise even more to benefit programs in St. Croix, Pierce, Polk, Burnett and Washburn Counties.
For more information on the online auction, contact Kate Smith at 715-377-0203 ext. 103 or ksmith@unitedwaystcroix.org.

Youth Service Bureau Helps Teens Stay on Track
| The following is a personal story submitted by United Way funded agency Youth Service Bureau. Find out firsthand how this agency is making a difference in the community.
It doesn't take much for me to explode. Seems like I'm always angry: Angry at my mom for caring more about her bottle than me, angry about her string of boyfriends who try to hit on me. At least, now that I moved to grandma's house, I don't have to deal with all that. But why doesn't she love me enough to care about me?
So I take a little drink, to numb the mind. Another one, to pretend I don't care. Perhaps a third one to make it through the day. Gosh, it's senior year, so who cares if I miss a day of school here or there.
In October, the school guidance counselor invited me to her office. Not sure what she thinks she can do about the pain. She introduced me to the Chemical Health Prevention Specialist and suggested that we should talk. And talk we did. She even called me at home during school breaks and during the summer after graduation to see how I am doing. It feels really different to know that someone cares about me.
Haven't kicked the alcohol yet but I'm being more honest about what I'm feeling and why I'm drinking. I managed to cut back considerably but have a ways to go yet. I realize now that I won't change my mom, and that it's okay to be sad but I don't have to blow up at everyone else and then drink to numbness.
Meanwhile, I started making it to school on time more often and actually was prepared for class more often than not. In June, I actually graduated. And my YSB counselor was there to help me celebrate the occasion responsibly.
