United Way's Response to the Crisis in Japan

From United Way Worldwide: We've all been shocked and moved by the images and stories coming out of Japan following the earthquakes, tsunami, and now, nuclear crisis. Conditions are deteriorating, and United Way Worldwide is determined to support the Community Chest of Japan, a part of the United Way worldwide network.
We know the Community Chest of Japan has established a fund, but chaos and difficulty inside of Japan are presenting a challenge to them for setting up a website where people can give direct donations. United Way Worldwide is now accepting contributions on our website for the Community Chest of Japan, and the funds will be directed to the Community Chest of Japan through United Way's International Donor Advised Giving (IDAG) program.

United Way Teams with St. Croix Valley Foundation for Local Flood Relief Efforts

The St. Croix Valley Area Flood Response Fund supports nonprofit agencies assisting victims of the 2011 flooding in the St. Croix Valley area of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Your contribution will help address both immediate and long-term flood response efforts not covered by government relief sources. This fund is a collaborative effort between the St. Croix Valley Foundation, its affiliates and United Way St. Croix Valley.
The counties covered by the fund include:
- Chisago, MN
- Pierce, WI
- Polk, WI
- St. Croix, WI
- Washington, MN
Distributions from the fund will support local response efforts in flood impacted regions. Your gift will be distributed to nonprofit agencies providing immediate and long-term aid. Decisions on the allocation of funds will be made in consultation with and support the work of key partners such as American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Community Thread (for volunteer coordination) and other response agencies. This fund complements other St. Croix Valley flood response funds.
GiveMN's partners will cover credit card transaction fees, so you can be sure that your gift will be distributed to nonprofit agencies meeting the needs of flood victims.
Contributions to the fund can also be sent to St. Croix Area Flood Response c/o St. Croix Valley Foundation, 516 Second Street, Suite 214B, Hudson, WI 54016. More information about the fund is available at:

Head Start Young Readers Benefit from United Way

New Richmond Head Start children benefit through the literacy program, Wisconsin "Book Worms," which is a collaborative-sponsored partnership including Wisconsin Public TV, St. Croix County Association for Home and Community Education, and United Way St. Croix Valley. Each month a "Grandma Reader" reads the book of the month to the Head Start children and then the children are able to take a copy of that book home for their very own. In all, each child will have nine books in their personal library by the end of the school year. Without your generous monetary gifts to United Way St. Croix Valley, our at-risk children would not receive this benefit of literacy. Thank you to the "Grandma Readers" for volunteering your time and talent; you are a very positive influence on our young readers. If you would like to know about any above mentioned programs please feel free to contact Mona Karau at 715-246-3232, New Richmond Head Start.
