United Way St. Croix Valley Distributes Funds
|
The United Way St. Croix Valley Board
of Directors approved the distribution of funds raised through the 2009 - 2010 annual
campaign and the first round of checks have been mailed to nonprofit agencies. "It was another year of tough decisions for
our Board due to a continued decline in campaign revenue which left United Way
with fewer funds to distribute," said Executive Director John Coughlin. "They made a decision to maintain the level
of funding in the Basic and Emergency Needs category but most other agencies
saw about a 5% reduction in funding," he continued.
United Way continues to focus on
three initiatives in addition to providing funds to nonprofit agencies: United
Way's Food Resource Center, Success By 6 and Shelter for All. United Way St.
Croix Valley Board President Pat Powers said, "We are absolutely committed to providing
strong support for the homeless shelter and the local food pantries during
these tough economic times."
United Way St. Croix Valley
awarded $606,351 in grants to support close to 60 nonprofit agency programs and
services. United Way and its Citizen Review Panel volunteers allocate the funds
to create lasting impact in the categories of: Basic and Emergency Needs;
Children and Families; and Health and Independent Living. An additional $30,428
will go to specific agencies designated by the donors. The total distribution will
be $636,779. United Way's overall benefit
to the community this year will be about $875,000 when food supplied by the
Food Resource Center is taken into account. The Center has provided about a half-million pounds of food since
opening in 2008. The food is distributed
through area food pantries, community meals and senior dining sites.
Agencies meeting Basic and
Emergency Needs will receive $211,450. Programs for Children and Families will receive the largest
distribution totaling $265,051. Support
for programs that improve Health and Independent Living will total $101,875. Agencies in Burnett and Washburn Counties
will receive $27,975 entirely from funds contributed by area residents and the
owner and employees of Nexen Group, Inc. in Webster.

SUPERVALU Donates 20,000 Pounds of Food to Food Resource Center
|
Grocer SUPERVALU recently donated approximately 20,000 pounds of
food and other products to United Way's Food Resource Center. The
shipment included margarine, a variety of soups, nuts, toilet paper, pet food
and ice cream bars. The ice cream bars will be given to homebound senior
citizens and senior dining sites. The balance of the inventory will
be distributed to area pantries and shelters. The shipment is valued at
over $20,000. Executive Director John Coughlin said, "We are really glad
to get this shipment from SUPERVALU and the ice cream bars will be a nice treat
for our senior citizens now that the summer is heating up." SUPERVALU has been a generous supporter of United Way's effort to
end hunger in the valley. The Eden Prairie based grocer made their first
food donation in December 2005 to help local programs fill holiday food
baskets. That initial delivery of a 50' semi-trailer lead of food has
lead to an ongoing relationship between United Way St. Croix Valley and
SUPERVALU. The grocer donates a truckload about every 3 - 4 months. The trucking is provided free of charge by Charleson Trucking in Stillwater and
Cub Foods. United Way has distributed approximately 500,000 of food and other
product to help those in need since opening the Food Resource Center in
February 2008.

Basic Needs Campaign Raises $3,797.30
|
United Way St. Croix Valley is happy to announce that this spring's
Give 10, Tell 10 for Basic Needs campaign raised $3,797.30. The money
raised will go toward funding United Way agencies and initiatives that
meet basic needs such as providing food and shelter.
The
campaign ran from April 8 through May 15 as part of a larger effort to
raise money to close a $90,000 shortfall in last fall's United Way
campaign. In hopes of encouraging more community members to get
involved, the United Way Board of Directors pledged a matching
donation, which was met and is included in the final total of $3,797.30.
United
Way St. Croix Valley would like to extend its thanks to all those who
donated to the campaign, as well as the local businesses and school who
helped raise money:
- Associated Bank - First American Bank - Hudson Bagel & Coffee Company - M & I Bank - US Bank - Viking Middle School - Baldwin/Woodville School District - WESTconsin Credit Union
"We
are so thankful for the support that we received because it helped us
avoid funding cuts to agencies that are feeding and sheltering people,"
said United Way director John Coughlin. "The students at Viking Middle
School did a fantastic job raising money that will be used to support
area food pantries and shelters," he continued.
