From the Executive Director

For the last two years, Bethesda Green and partner Bethesda Magazine have presented Green Awards, selected from hundreds of "green" individuals and organizations nominated in seven categories. Nominees and particularly winners demonstrated exceptional commitment to the environment in areas as diverse as recycling, energy efficiency, conservation and farming. Many of our winners were actively engaged in environmental activities for years. Others embraced the environment fairly recently. Regardless, their leadership inspires the next generation as green continues to become more mainstream. As first-year winner Scott Nash, CEO of MOM's Organic Market, stated, "I look forward to a time when what we do is commonplace and everyone does these things because it make sense." Several colleagues asked me why these awards are important and particularly why businesses should care. I think the answer is clear: as residents, communities and local companies continue to face significant challenges, we need a wide array of innovative solutions and leaders committed to their implementation. It's a good bet that the best ideas are likely to emerge locally. The Green Awards nominees represent champions within Montgomery County and northwest DC and demonstrate how we can make our community a better place to live. They can also provide insight for businesses to successfully increase market share, improve the bottom line and better the planet. We hope you will apply (or nominate someone) for this year's awards, and we look forward to sharing your many successes and celebrating the winners at our Annual Gala this fall. |

Solar & Green Home Expo
On Saturday, June 9, Bethesda Green hosted its third annual Solar & Green Home Expo. The event drew 27 local green business vendors from Montgomery County and the surrounding metro area. Nearly 200 people attended the event throughout the day.
Participating businesses offered green services in the areas of solar energy, geothermal heating and cooling, composting, landscaping, home cleaning products, interior decorating, remodeling, building, energy audits, wind energy, real estate, lighting and sound systems, and much more. Workshops were held throughout the day for packed audiences who were eager to learn more about green home remodeling, solar power, energy audits, tax rebates and incentives, and geothermal. See event photos published in Bethesda Magazine. More information and a complete list of participating vendors available here.

If you've ever been in the Bethesda Green office, you may have noticed the big Bethesda Green sign in the conference room. I've always assumed that everything in the Bethesda Green office is eco-friendly, and indeed, that sign is no different. It was created by Dave Taghipour and the team at Speedy Signs in Wheaton, MD.
