Green is more than a color.

The term is closely related to the Old English verb growan, "to grow" and is frequently associated with both nature and money.  It can be said that being green improves both the environment AND the economy.

As we approach Earth Day, we recognize the potential that "green" businesses have as change leaders, both those that offer sustainable products and services and those more traditional companies greening their operations.

One reason to go green is the financial savings by improving efficiency. Reducing consumption decreases costs. Further, companies who commit to sustainability can gain recognition, a competitive advantage and increase employee morale and retention. And of course, there are positive environmental impacts.

Many local companies have committed to sustainability practices and policies. These organizations can get a certificate through the Green Business Certification Program offered by Montgomery County's Department of Environmental Protection.

Leading companies can also compete for the Green Awards presented by Bethesda Magazine and Bethesda Green. The online nomination process runs until June 29.

For those interested in starting on a green journey, please contact us at Bethesda Green or take our survey. We may be creating a service to help go green.

Good for business. Good for the environment.

Happy Earth Day.

Incubator Spotlight
Eco Home Store

Who would have thought that two long time corporate drones (a lawyer and IT manager) would find their life's dream in green retail?  As 2009 ushered in a historic presidency, sisters and working moms (Shelley Nuttall Martinez and Donna Nuttall Joe), had no idea that they were soon headed towards entrepreneurship.Eco Home Store logo

Shelley used her software development background to work with a website designer to implement the Eco Home Store online version 1.0.  Donna utilized her extensive experience with corporate transactions and contract negotiations to forge relationships with vendors and online daily deal sites, and developed a new found talent (and interest) in marketing.

Once the site went live after Thanksgiving 2010, Shelley took over operations from New Mexico while Donna worked her marketing magic from the DC area. The early winter months were slow but following a few promising deals with some major daily deal sites like Groupon and Living Social, Eco Home Store started increasing both customers and sales.

Eco Home Store online fared well for a start-up in 2011.  With a revamped website and plans to relocate operations to MD in summer 2012, Eco Home Store is looking to become the premiere online source for eco-friendly products for the home, garden, pets and baby.  More >>

Bike to Work Day in Bethesda

New bike racks to be unveiled at May 18 event

Bike to Work logo Just in time for the upcoming Bike to Work Day, downtown Bethesda is moving to increase its bike parking spots by 50 percent. With the support of Honest Tea and the Coca-Cola Company, Bethesda Green and Bethesda Urban Partnership are planning to unveil the first of a number of new bike racks to be installed in the commercial district.

Hundreds of bike commuters will converge Friday morning, May 18, at the Bethesda Pit Stop at the corner of Woodmont & Bethesda Avenues between 6:30-8:30 am.

Bike to Work Day encourages commuters to do their part to support increased bicycle commuting in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Managed throughout the area by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, you can join over 10,000 area commuters for a celebration of bicycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work. By promoting biking as a commute option, traffic and parking congestion can be eased, thereby improving the quality of life enjoyed by the people of the region.

Highlights of the Bike to Work Day in Bethesda, managed by
Bethesda Transportation Solutions, a division of Bethesda Urban Partnership, include breakfast, entertainment, dynamic speakers, and chances to win a bicycle and other prizes.
