From the Executive Director

I frequently say that "green" is the new gray -- that environmental issues are never black and white. This week I saw the World Premier of the film Switch as part of the Environmental Film Festival at the Carnegie Institution for Science. The movie was an in-depth analysis of the various energies that built our world and will shape our future. It offered a wide-ranging perspective about the challenges we face, presenting pros and cons of each industry (natural gas, coal, petroleum, biomass, wind, solar, geothermal, hydro power and nuclear) and sharing perspectives through the eyes of science, government, business and affected communities. We clearly need access to energy -- for transportation, growing food, light, heat and running appliances -- and have some room to make personal choices (I side with renewable when possible). But with China and India experiencing rapid industrial growth, instability in oil-producing regions, resource price fluctuations and other competitive pressures, no solution comes without risk. The obvious option is using less and even that comes with costs. This year is the 20-year anniversary of the film festival. With 180 films on a variety of topics, double the number from last year, there is bound to be a subject that could interest and inform you on so many important issues. It isn't always easy to know what to do, but education is the first step. Changes in every sector are happening at a rapid pace and all of us have an obligation to understand the issues, be accountable for our choices and act with integrity. Yes, everything may seem gray, but the answers become less so when we have the courage and commitment to face these issues head-on. |
Internship Fair Wrap-up
On February 25, Bethesda Green hosted its third annual Fields of Green Internship Fair, attracting 24 green employers and over 120 students. The employers represented both national and international environmental organizations, offering over 100 paid and unpaid environmental internships. With widespread notice shared at all the local DC metro area (MD, DC, and NoVA) college campuses and various other marketing channels, the response to the internship fair was remarkable. We had students emailing and calling from all over the globe and attend the event from as far away as North Carolina, NYC and Boston, looking to secure an internship with one of our participating employers. The overall feedback from students and employers was that the Fields of Green Internship Fair filled a great need for local area green jobs. For many of the students who attended, this will be their first step in the professional job arena. And, for our employers who were hoping to attract top talent to their business, they weren't disappointed. For more information about employers that participated and internship descriptions, check out the Bethesda Green website.

Incubator Spotlight Doo Consulting
"What uses 12% of our water and 70% of our electricity, while putting out 30% of all greenhouse gases and 65% of all waste?" asks Peter Doo, president of Doo Consulting LLC, a Bethesda Green incubator company. "The answer is...buildings!" It was in 2001 that Doo, then an architect of over 20 years experience, first glimpsed the difference he could make in the lives of his child ren and of future generations -- by designing green buildings. Inspired by an international conference on green building, he not only began to design green buildings, but to advocate for shifts in building codes, to make green building common practice in his home state of Maryland. "My fellow advocates and I worked to get a law passed that required all state-funded projects in Maryland to meet minimum green standards," explains Doo. Doo was inspired by their success, and decided to start a consulting firm to expand his impact. He moved from designing one building at a time as an architect to assisting numerous architects, contractors, developers and municipalities in designing green buildings and developing green alternatives to "standard business practices." To date, Doo Consulting has certified dozens of green buildings under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, developed an international competition to explore the sustainable characteristics of building materials, and assisted municipalities in developing its own set of green standards and sustainability metrics. "Today, we are actively bringing our strong knowledge of buildings and sustainable practices to the Bethesda and greater DC area," explains Doo. "We are excited to be providing our services to Bethesda Green and Capital One to create a green building right here in Bethesda." The Capital One Bank building at 4825 Cordell Avenue, the location of Bethesda Green and the incubator companies, will be certified under the LEED for Existing Buildings rating system. "We will help to implement green retrofits, green leases, and green policies," says Doo, "earning Capital One and Bethesda Green a credential that demonstrates their commitment to sustainable business practices and creating a best-in-class office building in the heart of Bethesda." Doo Consulting provides educational presentations, LEED certification services and strategic sustainability services in the greater Washington metro area.
