From the Executive Director

A new year often brings a new perspective, a chance to reflect on what is working, what is not and what can be done better. It's an opportunity to ask about what kind of world you want and what you can do to make that a reality.

At our recent First Thursday Happy Hour, we asked everyone to share their New Year's Resolutions. Of course there was a "green" theme, but everyone spoke their mind as to what they personally would change. Responses were as broad as recycling more to eating healthier food. See a sampler of some of the more interesting resolutions below.

My personal goal this year is to lead a more sustainable life. This isn't just a play on words but an attempt to find balance in the pressure-filled culture in which we live. Professionally, my hope is to continue building Bethesda Green while launching similar initiatives in other markets. Personally, I want to develop new skills and simplify so I can enjoy a good quality of life.

Organizations make changes and Bethesda Green is no different. We are in the second year of our Strategic Plan and looking to initiate multiple new programs. With increased staff, we are in a strong position to build on our previous accomplishments (see our recent Mission Report). And with the addition of three new members on our Board of Directors (Lisa Fadden, The Chevy Chase Land Company; James Martinko, Reznick Group, and Steve Silverman, Director, Montgomery County Department of Economic Development), it will likely be attainable.

It's not to late to think about your changes. If possible, make it fun. Also, make it realistic and measurable. And if it is significant, ensure you celebrate.

If you have a green goal, feel free to drop me a line

Happy New Year.

Internship Fair
FOG logo

Are you an employer looking for a stellar intern to help you grow your green business or organization? Are you that stellar student or recent grad looking for an internship to get real world experience in the green sector?

If either of these descriptions sounds like you, then please plan to join us Saturday, February 25, 10 am - 2 pm for our third annual Fields of Green Internship Fair. This is a great opportunity for young people ages 19-26 to line up internships with companies and non-profits offering job experience in the green business sector.

More than 20 companies will be in attendance. Learn about academic and government programs, as well as a variety of internships, including those with our own Green Business Incubator companies.

If you represent a company that would be interested in participating, please contact Bethesda Green Program Manager Sharon D'Emidio, [email protected], ASAP as space is limited and filling up quickly.

Check out our website for more information.

The Green Market blog post

The January 2012 Bethesda Green First Thursday Happy Hour attendees submitted  their resolutions for the new year.  Here's a sampler of some highlights.
  • Get people with disabilities green jobs!
  • Commercial launch of The Renewables: Thinkable is Doable! and of The Renewables' "Call to Open Farms" initiative.
  • Move to a house where I can bike or metro to work and ditch the car!
  • Get my church to install 4" of insulation when we contract for a new roof and make it solar compatible.
  • Build a greener battery.
  • Save the Capital Crescent trail.
  • Follow upon my home energy audit and evaluate my roof for solar.
Thank you to everyone for their submissions, which we're posting around the Bethesda Green office. Come visit and see some more when you get a chance.
