From the Executive Director
Food is a staple for sustainability.
When Bethesda Green launched, initial interest was primarily around energy and recycling. Over time though, we heard repeated requests to work on food-related issues. Why such a hotbed topic and what does food and agriculture have to do with green and sustainability?
 | | Dave Feldman |
In a nutshell, everything about food has an environmental impact. Our food travel great distances (1500 miles on average); farmland provides open spaces and opportunities for economic development; pesticides and fertilizer affect both soil and crops; organic food is touted as a healthier option; the agriculture industry is a large consumer of water and much more.
There are many new trends and innovations throughout the supply chain. Sustainable businesses and entrepreneurs are offering new approaches to growing, delivering and preparing food. From farmers markets to Michelle Obama's enthusiasm for child nutrition, new solutions are becoming available to meet changing consumer tastes.
Here's some recent highlights of our work around food:
- BKind Vending, one of our incubator companies, is featured in the July/August issue of Bethesda Magazine.
- Montgomery County is hosting its 22nd Annual Farm Tour & Harvest Sale this weekend, July 23 & 24, noon - 4 pm. Come celebrate Montgomery County's agricultural heritage.
- Bethesda Green is co-hosting an educational series (breakfast, lunch and dinner) to introduce you to the sustainable and healthy food system in our region.
Summer is a great time for food. BBQs, picnics, parties. Eat green and enjoy the summer. |

Bethesda Green and Full Plate Ventures present
Connecting farmers, food, and community in three meals
Everyone eats, food connects us all. Join us for this late summer series and enjoy the gastronomic pleasures of three great meals while meeting those who are passionate about building a sustainable and healthy food system in our region.
Each event will feature a locally grown, homemade, and seasonal meal. Over a Sunday breakfast learn about the interconnections of a healthy sustainable food system; over a Saturday lunch we tour Rocklands Farm to see what sustainable farming is all about; and finally we will share a Monday dinner with Chef Tony to savor his menu of local flavor while learning about the joys and challenges of cooking simply and seasonally.

"Speed-to-market is important, but making sure a business has the right strategy and can execute against it is critical," says Lynn Miller, CEO of 4GreenPs, one of the first companies to join Bethesda Green's Business Incubator.
"Whether it's energy efficient products or CSR campaigns, marketers need to expand their focus on the mass market -- for the benefit of us all." More >>
