From the Executive Director
In 2010, Bethesda Green in partnership with Bethesda Magazine hosted a Green Awards competition. We received 140 nominations for individuals and organizations in seven categories representing different sectors in our community. Winners demonstrated exceptional commitment to the environment in areas as diverse as recycling, energy efficiency, conservation and farming. Our first year winners were all actively engaged in environmental activities for years. Their leadership will inspire the next generation as green continues to become more mainstream. As winner Scott Nash, CEO of MOM's Organic Market, stated last year, "I look forward to a time when what we do is just average and everyone does things that make common sense." | Dave Feldman |
We are all still learning and exploring new approaches to almost everything we do. So we announce the beginning of the nomination process for our 2011 Green Awards competition. We expect this year's applicants will again represent a wide range of categories, including alternative energy technologies; water collection, purification and distribution; agricultural practices to reduce pesticide run-off; new technologies for green buildings and much, much more. We will continue to face significant challenges and will need a wide array of innovative solutions. I was greatly encouraged by last year's entrants and look forward to another diverse field of possibilities and initiatives. We hope you will apply (or nominate someone) for this year's awards and we look forward to sharing your many successes.

Greening Condos
Session 4, June 1 Lower the Cost of Energy Efficiency Improvements for Your Building - Incentives and Financing That Save Money Once a condo building's energy audit is complete, the condo board will be presented with a prioritized list of actions it can take to improve efficiency. How is this work funded?
This panel first explores incentive programs (both grants and financing) available from Pepco or through government sources. Second, Monument Bank will describe how loans are given for these improvements and what boards can expect in terms of credit requirements and loan terms. Finally, a tax accountant will describe how Federal Tax Credits for common area improvements can roll through the non-profit association to the benefit of each individual owner of the building.
The Greening Condos series -- presented by Bethesda Green, ecobeco and event sponsors -- targets residents, boards, property managers, and companies that provide green services to condominiums.
The five monthly sessions are scheduled at Bethesda Green on the first Wednesday every month through July. Sessions run from 7-9 pm. Light appetizers will be served.
