From the Executive Director
Our April newsletter is one of my favorites. This issue not only marks the transition from winter to spring but also is sent around Earth Day, a time when those working in "green" fields are high in demand. Even after 41 years and almost daily news decrying the woes of | | Dave Feldman |
our planet, Earth Day serves a vital role. It's both an opportunity to celebrate the planet and raise awareness about protecting it. Earth Day (and the weeks before and after) generates dialogue about important issues that affect us all -- waste and recycling, food and health, clean water, energy creation and consumption, city planning and design, and community development. It reminds us that Earth supports great diversity and we need to conserve our natural resources for future generations. Earth Day also highlights our need to work together in our own neighborhoods and region. There are many grassroots programs around the area -- from creek clean-ups (litter and invasive species removal) to shredding and recycling events. Local groups offer education on a variety of topics and mobilize around relevant campaigns. Please look for something in your area or start your own. The Earth Day Network website offers suggestions for Billion Acts of Green. Earth Day is just one day but a reminder for how we should act all year. Please do your part to protect the environment. It's our future. |

The Greening Condos series targets residents, boards, property managers, and companies that provide green services to condominiums. Energy Efficiency Funding Available
Submit Your Application Now
Montgomery County recently announced it will provide rebates of up to $75,000 to small and medium sized businesses, multi-family properties, and non-profit organizations to offset a portion of the cost of energy efficiency upgrades. The program will reimburse 50% of the cost of qualified energy efficiency improvements or $75,000 per recipient, whichever is less. The program will also provide rebates for residential energy efficiency improvements identified through a "Maryland Home Performance with ENERGY STAR" audit. Funds are available for improvements to the building envelope, lighting, heating and air conditioning, and other categories that will reduce energy consumption and lower energy bills. The county anticipates having approximately $1.7 million available and applications will be accepted in two rounds.
