Bethesda Green Gala, October 7

Gala means "festive," an atmosphere, decoration or attitude of celebration.  So what is a "green gala"?

A green gala celebrates innovation and activism, creativity and commitment.  It celebrates people, companies, goods and services and guidelines that work to preserve and protect our planet.

Sound like fun? It will be.

On October 7, the Bethesda Green Gala at Imagination Stage will recognize the seven winners of the Bethesda Magazine Green Awards.  These "green champions" were selected from 130 nominations in and around Montgomery County -- businesses, non-profits, communities and individuals.

We will also celebrate the accomplishments of others Gala logotaking their own steps to better the planet.  They are the Bethesda Green community -- our board, volunteers, sponsors, incubator companies, partners and friends.

This evening will inspire with ideas, opportunities, people and stories.  We will share insights about making lifestyle changes with a more earth-friendly approach.  We take green seriously -- it is our future -- but we also believe that there is much to celebrate already.

Please join us October 7 as we Inspire, Celebrate and Recognize.

"Global Work Party" October 10

Volunteers upgrade homes as part of day to affect climate solutions in Montgomery County

Responding to a call for action from 350.org, the international climate campaign founded by sustainability guru Bill McKibben, a "Global Work Party" involving thousands of events around the world is happening October 10 (10/10/10).

Locally, on that Sunday, a coalition of groups is organizing 350 Montgomery County: Saving Energy, Helping Homeowners, Cutting Carbon, a volunteer effort to make energy efficiency upgrades to five homes in Montgomery County.  Bethesda Green and one of our Green Business Incubator Companies, the Maryland Energy & Sustainability Co-op, will be working on one of the houses in Rockville.

Caulking windows, weather-stripping doors, and swapping light bulbs are all little steps toward real climate solutions.  We'll also be helping homeowners cut their energy costs and enjoy a fun day of community building.

For more information on this effort, stay tuned to the Co-op blog (nrgcoop.wordpress.com).

More Recycling Bins in Bethesda

Building upon a project started two years ago, Bethesda Green has championed adding new recycling bins in the Bethesda Row business district. Purchased and installed by property owner Federal Realty, a BG sponsor and board representative, each bin will have a plaque with the name of the co-sponsor(s) and an environmental "educational fact" displayed to increase public awareness.

Initially launched with the support of Honest Tea and The Coca-Cola Company, the recycling bin project led to 15 bins being placed around Woodmont Triangle, Veterans Park, the Metro station, among other locations in downtown Bethesda.  All bins are co-located with existing trash receptacles and maintained by Bethesda Urban Partnership (BUP).

BUP empties the trash receptacles and transports material to the Montgomery County Transfer Station where the County sorts recyclable contents.

A number of co-sponsorship opportunities for the new Bethesda Row bins are available.  Please contact Bethesda Green for more information.
