From the Executive Director
I am in awe. Bethesda Green, in partnership with Bethesda Magazine,
solicited nominations from businesses, non-profits, communities, individuals
and schools across Montgomery County and Northwest DC for our first Green
Awards. And we received over 120 nominations
from local champions leading the fight to protect the environment. What struck me were not only the innovative ideas and green
solutions of our nominees but the passion of those who nominated them as well. They used inspiring words like "driving
force," "visionary," "green warriors," "tireless sacrifice," "committed efforts"
and "excellence." They highlighted
better ways of doing things and making a difference. No doubt, our judges (of which I was not one)
had a difficult time selecting winners. The accomplishments of these groups were broad and extremely
encouraging. There were stories of
innovation for delivering solar energy to reducing annual expenditures on
electricity, new quality products to outreach and education. Some restored wetlands while others
overhauled their homes and changed their lifestyles. Some were renegade recyclers and others led
community organizations. They were as diverse
as a large Fortune 500 multi-national to a six-year-old who created an award-winning recycling billboard. On October 7, Bethesda Green is hosting a gala not only to Recognize the winners but Celebrate all the champions. We
want to share their stories and Inspire others. As our plans take shape, you'll hear more about the Gala and
these awe-inspiring stories in the week's ahead. Please visit our website regularly. If you'd like to become a sponsor, donate an auction item or contribute in any way, please send a note to gala@bethesdagreen.org. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your summer,

Intern Profile -- Rachel Jaffe
Intern Rachel Jaffe | Meet the
interns supporting our work at Bethesda Green.
How did you get involved with Bethesda Green? I helped
out at one film screening and loved it so much that I came back for more!
What kind of work do you do at BG? I
have helped out with planning and running the children's activities at
Imagination Bethesda and Solar Bethesda. I have also begun blogging for BG to
add a personal and quirky perspective into the overall perception of what it
means to live a sustainable lifestyle. What have you gotten out of your experience at BG so far? A
lot of Honest Tea and some really awesome bookmarks. Aside from this, I have
also gotten to feel as if my efforts at Bethesda Green mean something, and I
have gotten to work for a place that is bringing positive change to a community
that I care about. I have also been introduced to the workings of a small
business, which has helped me understand how the principles and theories that I
have learned in class are put into practice.
