From the Executive Director
Thanks to the outpouring of responses from all segments of our community in nominating Green Champions for the 2010 Bethesda Magazine Green Awards, we're off to a fantastic start putting in place the pieces for a spectacular Bethesda Green Gala, October 7 at Imagination Stage. Businesses, nonprofits, individual adults and children with stories of extraordinary service to the environment -- over 120 nominations in total -- will take the spotlight at our Gala, and Bethesda Magazine will profile the winners in its November / December issue. Bethesda Magazine publisher Steve Hull has a huge task before him and has enlisted the help of a distinguished panel of judges to determine the winners. In our minds, every nominee is a champion, and we intend to share their stories as a source of inspiration for others in our community. As our plans take shape, you'll be hearing more about the Gala in the week's ahead. Meanwhile, we're actively soliciting sponsorships and donations for the silent auction. If you'd like to help or contribute in any way, please send a note to gala@bethesdagreen.org. Thursday, October 7, 2010 | Thank you and enjoy the rest of your summer,

Dave Feldman Executive Director |

Social Meetups Build Community
Join us August 5 for casual conversation and social networking
Since we started using Meetup to organize social events earlier this year, Bethesda Green has attracted 60-75 attendees to its First Thursday Happy Hours. We also used Meetup to promote our gathering June 30 at the Bethesda Big Train baseball game (see a selection of photos from the event and a fun blog post by BG intern Rachel Jaffe).
These informal gatherings are a wonderful way to connect with the growing Bethesda Green community. We invite you to join us August 5 for our next First Thursday Happy Hour at Union Jack's British Pub.
RSVP through Bethesda Green Meetup
A contribution of $5 is requested at the door. Union Jack's will donate 10 percent of sales to Bethesda Green.August 5 First Thursday Happy Hour Sponsor | Union Jack's British Pub 4915 St. Elmo Avenue Bethesda, MD 20814 Public parking garage located on St. Elmo Avenue

BG Board Member Rosalie Grazzini | Bethesda Green Adds New Board Members
Bethesda Green strengthened its Board of Directors with the recent addition of Rosalie Grazzini and Ralph Smith, who offer a direct connection between BG's Board and its Leadership Team of volunteers. Grazzini and Smith have managed a number of successful projects over the past year, most notably the March 27 Fields of Green Internship Fair and the June 12 Solar Bethesda expo.
BG Board Member Ralph Smith | In addition to being one of our area's leading green advocates, Grazzini is a successful businesswoman and the mother of four school-age children, who still finds time to be the Volunteer Coordinator for Bethesda Green. Before heading up the Solar Bethesda program, Smith led the design and management of BG's GreenerLiving Program, a series of workshops where attendees learned from experts about energy conservation, energy
efficiency and renewable energy alternatives for the home. He is the owner of Smith Design / Construction.

Intern Profile -- Mark Strella
Intern Mark Strella | Meet the
interns supporting our work at Bethesda Green.
How did you get involved with Bethesda Green? Around when I was looking for summer jobs, someone shot me an email of an
article that mentioned the work Bethesda Green was doing. I looked into them
and it sounded like the perfect place to work for the summer. I applied, had a
good chat with Dave H, and got the job!
What kind of work do you do at BG? It's been a wide variety of things. Besides the normal intern stuff, I've
been doing a lot of work on Solar Bethesda, writing various articles/blogs and
compiling info sheets for Bethesda Green to hand out. What have you gotten out of your experience at BG so far? The real-life educational aspect to it has been really rewarding. For
example, it's one thing to learn about solar power in a classroom, but it's
another to work with and talk to the actual people in the solar industry about
solar power. Also, it's been interesting to see the way BG combines a top-down
and bottom-up approach to the green movement. The government can do great
things for the environment, as can individual citizens, but working to have
both sides feed off of each other makes it so much more effective. Having a NPO
like Bethesda Green in the middle gathering both sides together to harness the
collective ideas and energy is a truly innovative idea.
