From the Executive Director

Every day we're confronted with disturbing images of oil belching out of control in the Gulf of Mexico.  The lack of solutions reflect the complex world in which we live because there's no clear-cut answer for how to resolve this national crisis.

In response to a question I'm frequently asked, "What can we do?" I suggest we focus on what we can control, starting with the community in which we live.

And there's no better way to answer that question than to follow the lead of others who are pushing boundaries and taking an active role to improve our environment while building a healthy economy and sustainable community.

We know there are numerous examples of true green champions throughout our region.  And with the help of our friends at Bethesda Magazine, we're delighted to recognize businesses, non-profits, individuals and communities through a Green Awards program we are co-hosting.  We will profile winners in their magazine as well as at our first Gala on October 7 (please save the date!).

We encourage you to nominate those deserving of these awards. In the meantime, please continue to support green programs, organizations, and lifestyles.  We need it now more than ever.

More than 250 attendees visited Bethesda Green Saturday, June 12, for our inaugural Solar Bethesda event, which provided an opportunity to get the latest information about solar-powered technologies, purchasing and investment opportunities, and incentives for home installation.

Don't worry if you missed the event.  We will continue to add information about solar to our website, including these short PDF files:
We're grateful for the help of numerous volunteers in planning Solar Bethesda, in particular Ralph Smith of Smith Design/Construction, who had the original vision for the event and managed the countless details necessary to bring it to reality.

Farm Market Musings

by Rachel Jaffe

Visiting the Bethesda Central Farm Market on Elm Street, the giddy combination of sunshine, succulent smells and tasty sights -- from the fresh fruit to gelato to sausages to pastries -- made it all too easy to just dive in and enjoy myself.

While I love the free samples, the underlying convictions of building a community where food could be grown close to home and with greater care for the environmental impact of production were not lost on me. Perhaps this was because it was pretty obvious that only people who cared deeply about what they were doing would stand on their feet to sell their wares in the sweltering heat. Or perhaps, it was something more subtle, like the light gossip being tossed back and forth that made everyone feel familiar, or the ambling gait that made the fear of a corporate tomorrow feel small and far away.
