From the Executive Director

For many months, we have shared aspects of Bethesda Green's activities, programs and ideas. For a small organization with a staff of two, we have done a superb job (I must say) of getting our story out.

There is no way a staff of two could accomplish all this in isolation. Of course we have a team behind us -- a dynamic and vibrant community -- individuals and businesses that come together and make contributions toward the creation and enhancement of a place they feel passionate about. They are local to Bethesda, Montgomery County and the Greater DC region.

There are many common characteristics of community. Robert Putnam in his book Bowling Alone finds that a community's well-being is dependent on the quality of relationships among the citizens of that community. Other factors include a sense of place, shared interests, history and culture and socio-economic status.

So it is with this newsletter, I introduce to you a small subset of our community, just a few of the individuals and businesses that have helped make Bethesda Green a successful initiative and your community a better place to live:
  • E-Car Solutions - Incubator Company
  • Ann Dorough - Outreach Coordinator
  • Rosalie Grazzini - Fields of Green Project Manager
  • Elizabeth LeVaca - Board Member
  • Dan Kulpinski/Laurie McKee - Website Developers
  • Keara Mehlert - Intern, Executive Assistant
  • MOMs Organic Market - Sponsor
  • Reznick Group - Accounting Firm
  • Ralph Smith - Solar Bethesda Project Manager
  • Bob Snyder - Incubator Advisor
A full list of our sponsors, incubator companies, volunteers, staff and board members can be found on our website and we will soon be adding sections to recognize donors and partners.

A community is a system of many pieces working together. For those of you who are part of our community, thank you.  For those not yet involved, please join us.

Be a Bethesda Green Community Ambassador

A critical driver to whatever success we have achieved at Bethesda Green comes from community engagement.  Building on foundations set over two years ago, we continuously seek the help of ambassadors who can connect us to their communities.

Whether you're a leader and a connector at your local school, neighborhood, faith-based community or affiliate non-profit organization, if you are willing to participate, your help would be greatly appreciated.  Take our brief info survey.

Composting Coffee Grounds

One of the things we love doing at Bethesda Green is expanding upon ideas we get from others in the community.  Composting coffee grounds is one such idea recently suggested by President of the Montgomery County Civic Federation and avid gardener, Peggy Dennis.

Dennis regularly collects coffee grounds from her neighborhood Starbucks to use as garden compost.  It's a great win-win scenario because the coffee grounds are diverted from the usual waste stream and end up becoming an attractive top coating that fertilizes the garden and deters ants.Coffee Beans

We offered to help Dennis establish a regular coffee grounds recycling system in Bethesda.  She's developed a simple project plan and is looking for one or two people to help get it going. If you're interested, send an email to info@bethesdagreen.org with the subject heading Composting Coffee Grounds.

We'll keep you posted as the project develops.
Green Business Survey

Last call for our Green Business Survey.  Here's your chance to take a step in responding to and benefiting from new opportunities in the emerging green economy -- and be eligible for some great prizes.

Survey participants will be entered in a raffle to win a great prize from one of our sponsors listed below.  We'll report on our findings and the winners later this summer.
