From the Executive Director
April 22
was the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Many
of us celebrated on the Mall, and as of this writing, more than 30 million commitments to green the planet have been logged in at the official Earth Day website. With the economy in
the dumps, it is easy to prioritize other issues, but it certainly is not in our
best interest to ignore the health and vitality of our planet. Earth Day was designed to inspire
awareness and appreciation for the environment. While the first Earth Day was focused entirely on the United States,
it is now observed each year on April 22 in virtually every country.
I recently came upon a film, "Home,"
that highlights the profound interconnection of people and nature. The
93-minute YouTube movie, narrated by Glenn Close, tells the story of Earth's evolution and the challenges we collectively face today. I was equally in awe of the content and
spectacular cinematography as I was with the remarkable number of
international organizations that supported the film.
In May, we connect global issues to
our own communities where we have the most impact. Bethesda Green and our partners recognize the
need for
collaboration, communication and inclusiveness if we are to ensure a high
quality of life for everyone.
Among other activities in May, we are participating in the Audubon Nature Fair, hosting our First Thursday Happy Hour at Caddies on Cordell, and launching a Community Coffee Talk in partnership with Hudson Trail Outfitters and Calleva. We
hope you can join us for these and future events. Happy
Anniversary everyone. Let's celebrate
together.

Earth Day celebrates 40 years
Bethesda Green volunteer Ann Dorough reflects on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day with a feature article about how
taking any action helps -- be it personal, such as installing a rain barrel or
helping with a stream clean-up, or political, such as lobbying your
congressperson.
