From the Executive Director
A new year presents
a great opportunity for reflection. Both
in our personal and professional lives we evaluate what is important and how we
want the next year to differ.
With that
in mind, we chose to start the year with a theme of The Three R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle because
these principles carry throughout the year. They apply to choices we make in our
daily lives both as consumers who use materials and businesses that design,
manufacture and package them. The objective is efficiency:
gain the maximum practical benefits from products and generate the minimum
amount of waste.
Between 1960 and 2008 the amount of waste each person creates has
almost doubled from 2.7 to 4.7 pounds per day. The most effective way to stop
this trend is by preventing waste in the first place. Reusing items is another way because it delays
or avoids that item's entry in the waste collection and disposal system. Recycling
turns materials that would otherwise become waste into valuable resources.
These principles can generate a host of financial, environmental, and
social returns. They present new opportunities to transform systems and "rethink" the way we design, use and dispose of products.
We stay committed to doing our part. In 2009,
Bethesda Green, with partners, collected for recycling
over 215,000 lbs. of electronics and 13,700 lbs. of paper to shred. We
collected three box trucks of donated clothing and household goods to be
redistributed to needy families, procured
and installed 15 recycling bins in the Bethesda Business District (collected
3600 lbs. of plastic, aluminum and glass containers), served as a drop-off
for 500 lbs. of denim for conversion to home insulation and provided
dozens of composting bins to residents.
In 2010, we will continue to expand programs that support
reuse, reduction and recycling, one of which -- recycling athletic shoes -- is featured below.
Let's commit, as both individuals and community, to making 2010 a more environmentally responsible year.
