MARCH  2012
Women's History Month
International Women's Day - March 8th

About International Women's Day

As part of Women's History Month, International Women's Day is marked on March 8th.  In different regions the focus of the celebrations range from general celebrations of respect, appreciation and love towards women to celebrations for women's economic, political and social achievements.

About Women's History Month

Women's History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as "Women's History Week."  Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as "Women's History Week."  In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women's History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as "Women's History Month."  Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women's History Month.  Since 1995, Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as "Women's History Month."

About This Year's Theme

Women's Education - Women's Empowerment   Although women now outnumber men in American colleges nationwide, the reversal of the gender gap is a very recent phenomenon. The fight to learn was a valiant struggle waged by many tenacious women-across years and across cultures-in our country.

Trust Tip - Consistency Pillar
by David Horsager

It is the little things, done consistently, that make the biggest difference. All of the Pillars are critical but if they are not practiced consistently, they crumble. Character once in a while is not character. Commitment only when you are winning is not commitment. On the other hand, consistent clarity builds a trusted message. Consistent compassion reveals trusted character. If consistency is missing, the pillars fall.  You will never get one big chance to be trusted in your life, only millions of small ones. Consistency is the only way to build a brand or reputation.

Apply it!  Ask yourself: Am I the same every time? Do I deliver the same quality, act with the same consistency, and speak with the same honesty all of the time regardless of the circumstances or people I am around?

Letter from Executive Director

Katie Reeder Headshot

I feel so privileged to have been selected as your new Executive Director.   EWI is an amazing organization with a wonderful history and a bright future.  I'm very excited to be part of it.

My extensive leadership background combined with my association experience, I believe, will enable me to serve you well as we move forward. I am committed to making sure that the corporate office provides all of the support necessary for EWI to achieve its strategic goals so that it may continue to grow and serve professional women everywhere.

As we move forward, I will look for new opportunities to increase the ways in which the corporate office engages with you and I hope that you all will not hesitate to engage me. By growing our relationship we will both be stronger. I firmly believe that there is nothing that a committed group of women cannot accomplish and so I know that together we can achieve great things using our rich history and tradition as a strong foundation for the future.

I'm looking forward to meeting many of you at Spring Conference and then at LCAM. In the meantime, my door is always open and my cell is always on. Don't hesitate to call or come in and let me know how I can serve you better.

This month's featured Planned Giving Program is "Bequests". This is a very popular way of leaving a legacy. There are many options for you to consider. Some bequests can qualify for additional tax charitable deductions. Which one is right for you? Plan now.

BEQUESTS:

* Specific bequest:
The donor bequeaths a certain amount of cash or specific assets to the charity.

* Residual bequest:
Bequest of all or a portion of the remainder or residue of a donor's estate after specific and other bequests have been distributed ensures that friends and relatives are provided for while still making a gift to charity.

* Percentage bequest:
The charity receives a certain percentage of the donor's estate or of another asset.

* Contingent bequest:
The charity receives the estate if others names in the will are not living at the time of the donor's death. Example: "I give all the rest, residue and remainder of my real and personal estate to my husband, (name), if he survives me; if not, then 50% in equal share to my children who survive me and 50% to (name of charity)."

* Restricted bequest:
To ensure gifts are used as intended, donors should be encouraged to consult with your charity prior to making final estate planning decisions.
