Update on Tanning Beds
| |
From an article posted on MSNBC.com
FDA mulls tougher tanning bed cancer warning But Indoor Tanning Association argues no new evidence of risks found
updated 1:43 p.m. ET, Mon., Jan. 18, 2010 WASHINGTON - Just as millions head to tanning beds to prepare for spring break, the Food and Drug Administration will be debating how to toughen warnings that those sunlamps pose a cancer risk.
Yes, sunburns are particularly dangerous. But there's increasing scientific consensus that there's no such thing as a safe tan either. This is a message that Katie Donnar, 18, dismissed until a year ago when, preparing for the Miss Indiana pageant, she discovered a growth on her leg - an early-stage melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

Fractional Laser Therapy Found Effective for Hands
|
When we hear about skin aging we think of our faces and necks. One of the earliest signs of aging is revealed in our hands.
Hands need regular care, but are often neglected. Contact with chemicals and water, sun, cold weather, and gardening all add stress and age to your hands. While hands do not have many oil glands, they can reveal early aging quicker than your face. What can you do to keep your hands youthful and beautiful?
Fractional laser
therapy (Fraxel), applied at conservative settings can achieve improvement in photo damaged hands, a pilot study revealed. Six months following last treatment sessions, patients in the study showed improvement in wrinkles, pigmentation, and skin texture. Results showed decrease in atypical keratinocytes (skin cells), enhanced collagen density for a more youthful look, improvement in the baseline irregular dermal architecture, and reduced sun damage.
Call today to schedule your Fraxel hand treatment and return your hands to their youthful appearance.

Summer Skin Care
|
As we slip out of the
cold winds of winter into the warmer weather of spring and summer, we need to
change the way we care for our skin. In winter months having adequate moisture
in the skin helped to repair and prevent damage caused by dryness. As spring and summer arrive we need to change our skin care regimen to keep our skin looking
and feeling smooth and healthy with a natural glow.
Cleanse: Cleanse away
excess oil, dirt, and residue which creates a dull appearance on
skin. Moisturize: Always
use a moisturizer. If your skin is more dry and dehydrated, use a moisturizing
cream. It contains more emollient. If you are more oily, or have acne skin,
use a lotion, which is more lightweight and
hydrating than a cream.
Sun Protection: A sunscreen of at least 30-spf should always be applied over moisturizer, unless your
moisturizer has an spf of 30 or higher in it. Some sunscreens that provide a
water-resistant base will not adhere to wet surfaces. So it is important to
apply to dry skin at least 15-20 minutes before going outside. Re-apply about
every 2 hours. A good sunscreen to look for is the broad spectrum which covers
both UVA rays (cause aging) and UVB rays (cause burning). Ingredients that cover
both UVA and UVB rays are your zinc oxides, titanium dioxides, and avobezone.
Children and anyone with sensitive skin, such as rosacea, do well with zinc oxide
and titanium dioxide instead of chemicals with parabens or paba, alcohol or
fragrances. Ask your Aesthetician for the names of products we
carry. Sunless Tanning
Lotions: Everyone wants that just kissed summer glow for their skin, and there
are many ways to achieve this. There is a way to tan without use of a tanning
bed, or laying for hours in the sun which end up aging us much quicker or taking
the chance of getting severe sun damage. That is to use sunless tanning lotions
or sprays. There are many varieties but one ingredient you want to look for is
DHA (dihydroxyacetone) which produces a tan color without the sun. First, cleanse
the skin, then apply a moisturizer ( this will ensure a more even application),
then apply sunless tanning lotion or spray. You will always want to do a test
area first, to find just the right tone you are looking for. This will also help
you to not end up looking more orange than bronzed. This is a safe way to get
that summer glow without being exposed to the harmful UVA and UVB
rays.
