Exercise Your Body and Your Skin
|
|
Lifting weights, doing aerobic workouts, and stretching into a yoga pose all benefit your skin as well as your body. Most of the time, exercise conjures up images of losing weight, building muscle, and trimming thighs. But now, doctors say, another body part may benefit from regular workouts -- your skin.
Indeed,
from reducing acne breakouts to fighting the signs of aging, health
experts say regular exercise can play a big role in how young and how
healthy your skin looks and feels.
"It's no secret that
exercise has important benefits for the entire body. But what many
people don't realize is that our skin is the largest organ of our body,
and thus, the benefits can be enormous," says Audrey Kunin, MD, a
Kansas City, Mo., dermatologist and author of The DERMAdoctor Skinstruction Manual.
Among
them, says Kunin, is increased circulation and delivery of nutrients to
skin cells, whooshing away potentially damaging toxins. Another is
giving skin the optimum conditions for making collagen, the support
fibers that help keep wrinkles and lines at bay. CLICK HERE TO VIEW FULL ARTICLE

Winter Skin Care Tips

6 Tips to Relieve Dry Skin Fast from WebMD
Give your dry skin the relief it craves.
Flaky, itchy, dry skin can plague you all year, but it's often worse in winter.
You want relief from dry skin. You want it fast. To help you give your dry skin the comfort it craves, WebMD turned to the skin care pros. We asked dermatologists for their top tips on how to combat dry skin fast. Here are their six simple solutions.
Warm Up to Warm Showers
The next time you bathe, the skin care experts recommend short, warm showers or baths no longer than 5 to 10 minutes. When you dry off, give your skin a gentle pat dry instead of a brisk rub. Immediately moisturize your body.
Grab a Gentle Cleanser
While you're taking those shorter showers, wash with a soapless cleanser. Or you can opt for gentle soaps that are free of fragrance, deodorant, or antibacterial additives, which can be harsh on skin.
Use That Razor Right
Shaving can irritate dry skin. After all, you're essentially scraping off natural oils as you shave off unwanted hair. If your razor blade isn't sharp, you're really asking for problem skin.

Wrinkles Around the Mouth

Women More Likely Than Men to Get Wrinkles Around the Lips; Is Biology to Blame?
Biology may be the reason why women are more prone than men to developing wrinkles around the lips -- called perioral wrinkles-- and deeper ones too, a new study says.
Researchers from the Netherlands say they've found that:
* Women's skin tissues around the mouth contain fewer sweat and sebaceous glands than men's, which could influence the natural filling of the skin.
* Women's skin tissues around the mouth contain fewer blood vessels than men's. Better circulation may help slow wrinkle development.
* In women, the closer attachment of muscle fibers surrounding the lips to the middle layer of skin may cause an inward traction, thus creating deeper wrinkles.

Tattoos: Risks and Precautions
|
Find out what risks tattoos pose, ways to protect yourself and what to do if you no longer want the body art.
A common problem with tattoos is dissatisfaction. Some tattoos fade. If
the tattoo artist injects the color too deeply into your skin, the dye
can drift - causing a blurred design. You may also decide that the
tattoo no longer fits your current image or that the once-stylish
design has become dated.
Tattoos are meant to be permanent, so their complete removal is
difficult. Several removal techniques exist, but regardless of the
method used, scarring and skin color variations are likely to remain.
A tattoo may take only a few hours to acquire, but invest plenty of
thought and research before getting one. If you first take steps to
protect yourself from possible risks, what seems like a cool idea now
is less likely to turn into a source of regret later.

Sunless Tanning: A Safe Alternative
|
Sunless tanning is a practical alternative to
sunbathing. Find out how sunless tanning products work, their risks and
the way to get a natural-looking tan.
You might think you have to choose: Expose your skin to the sun's
damaging rays to get a coveted tan, or avoid the sun and miss out on
that sun-kissed glow. But you have another option - sunless tanning
products.
Sunless tanning products, also called self-tanners or tanning
extenders, can give your skin a tanned look without exposing it to
harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Though generally recognized as safe,
sunless tanning products do carry some risks, depending on how they're
used and applied. CLICK HERE TO VIEW FULL ARTICLE

Healthy Skin: What Role Does Diet Play?
|
Are some foods better than others for healthy skin?
A healthy diet can help promote healthy skin. In particular,
antioxidant-rich foods seem to have a protective effect for the skin.
Good-for-skin foods include:
Fruits, especially cherries, berries, melons, apples and pears
Vegetables, especially spinach and other green leafy vegetables, eggplant, asparagus, celery and onions
Legumes, especially broad and lima beans
Fish
Nuts
Olive oil
On
the flip side, some foods seem to be associated with skin damage. For
example, a higher intake of meat and full-fat milk can increase the
risk of skin wrinkling.
