Congratulations Dr. Dintiman!
In January, Dr. Dintiman was appointed to the board of the Medical Society of Virginia.

Healthcare Reform
Dr. Dintiman and her daughter, Christine Shanahan, recently participated in an important Healthcare Reform symposium.  They were part of a group that was tasked with creating a document of ideas for improving our healthcare system.  This document was sent to the new administration.

Congratulations Linda Cushman! Linda, an Aesthetician since the 1970s went back to school to pursue the newly created, Master of Aesthetician's license. She completed her course work last week from the Yvonne deVilar Scientific Skin Care Academy. We are so proud of her!

Welcome the newest employee to the practice, Jana Fedorova.  Jana is a Master Aesthetician with over 11 years of experience in both skin care therapy and makeup artistry.  She has applied her skills in both the United States and Europe, where she was born.

Fair Oaks Skin Care is sad to announce that Kurt Maggio, M.D. , Colonel in the United States Army will be deployed to Iraq and will not be available at the practice for the next 6 months.  We are sad to see him go but we know that he is doing his duty to care for our soldiers overseas.  We will miss him.
New Year! New You!

This is the perfect time to think about having your unwanted red facial veins treated with the Vbeam laser. Having them treated in the winter months means there are less sun precautions that need to be taken into consideration after treatment, and less risk for pigmentation problems. Take advantage of our discount prices.

Sclerotherapy - treatment of spider veins of the legs can be achieved by using a solution that can diminish their appearance. Individual results will vary from patient to patient, however, most patients experience fading over a 2-4 week period of time. Multiple treatments are usually necessary to obtain maximum fading. Call the office today while the price is $200.00 per treatment!

Schedule a consultation with our Aesthetician today to discuss this amazing opportunity to transform your skin. Purchase a Nu-derm kit and receive a FREE Chemical Peel or Power Peel treatment.
Winter Watch on Psoriasis

Psoriasis can produce uncomfortable itching and pain in the skin as well as unsightly scaly red areas. Five percent of the population has psoriasis and it is thought to be genetically predisposed. At Fair Oaks Skin Care we are experienced in treating this common condition.

Psoriasis can be associated with the development of arthritis in the hands, feet and back. The progression of psoriasis can be prevented with oral medications such as methotrexate and biologic injections.

It has recently been found that Psoriasis patients show an increase risk of metabolic problems including diabetes and problems with the heart. We encourage a thorough approach to your treatment. Although your skin lesions may be well controlled, we recommend that you visit your internist to check your cholesterol, fasting sugar and insulin levels, and also discuss heart disease prevention by controlling your blood pressure, cholesterol and weight.

Lotions, Creams, Ointments - is there a difference?

Yes there is!  Lotions are liquid preparations in which inert or active substance is dissolved. They usually contain more water and there is a drying or cooling effect of the skin. Creams are emulsions of oil-in-water, so less water is present and are therefore more moisturizing. Ointments (such as Vaseline or Aquaphor) are thicker, and even more lubricating and moisturizing than creams or lotions. They have better penetration than creams or lotions through the skin and are therefore most effective for dry skin.

In winter, our skin becomes drier and may become itchy and inflamed. Moisturizing with creams and ointments may become essential. Call today for a consultation with our experienced Aestheticians to find the perfect moisturizer for your skin.

Medical breakthroughs in 2008

Dr. DintimanMedical breakthroughs in 2008 were seen as awe-inspiring and mired in controversy.

The Washington Times (12/31, Geracimos) reports, "Medical and scientific achievements in 2008 seldom were as dramatic as this month's announcement that doctors at the Cleveland Clinic had done the first transplant operation in this country to replace most of a patient's severely malformed face." An unidentified woman underwent the 23-hour procedure that "transformed" her "life as well as her physiognomy." But "often, what science gives, science takes away -- especially in medical matters, where many so-called pharmaceutical breakthroughs this year seemed to generate more controversy than usual." For instance studies regarding statins "immediately stirred debate among experts over the implications." Meanwhile, the "ever-broadening field of genetics made headlines, as usual, but gene therapy progresses slowly with its promise of being better able to detect, control, and treat human disease and dysfunction." Nonetheless, "DNA pioneer James Watson had his entire genome sequenced for a little less than $1 million," which was followed by the introduction of a $400 test "that claims to enable a person to map his genome in a more limited way."

Age Spot or Skin Cancer?

Some signs of aging that appear on the skin indicate more than advancing years; they warn of an underlying medical condition. What looks like an age spot could actually be an actinic keratosis. Left untreated, some actinic keratoses progress to skin cancer.

Dermatologists have the medical training needed to distinguish an age spot from skin cancer. They also regularly diagnose and treat the following medical conditions, which are more common in mature skin.

Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and the risk of developing it increases with age.

Nummular Eczema
Causing unique coin-shaped or oval lesions, this type of eczema often first appears between 55 and 65 years of age. Men tend to develop nummular eczema more frequently than women. For more information, visit: Nummular Dermatitis.

Rosacea
Redness, spider veins, and acne-like lesions on your face? You could have rosacea. To learn more, visit RosaceaNet.

Actinic Keratoses (AKs)
Are you bothered by rough, scaly patches on your skin? Do you see crusts or sores in areas that received years of sun exposure? These could be AKs, a common and potentially serious skin condition that should be treated. To learn more, visit ActinicKeratosesNet.

Adult Acne
Acne can persist well into one's 30s, 40s, and 50s. Sometimes acne becomes a problem for the first time in midlife. Adult acne that becomes a problem should be evaluated by a dermatologist because acne in one's adult years can be a sign of an underlying medical problem.

Seborrheic Keratoses
Often looking like a wart or skin cancer, seborrheic keratoses become more common and numerous with age. While not harmful, most people want these lesions removed. To learn more, visit Seborrheic Keratoses.

Shingles
If you had chickenpox earlier in life and are now experiencing severe pain and have blisters on your skin, it could be shingles. To learn more, visit the AgingSkinNet FAQs.

Stasis Dermatitis
Developing in the lower legs, this type of eczema causes a rash that often itches. You also may have painful sores on your legs, thinning skin, and discoloration. To learn more, visit Stasis Dermatitis.
