| Meet Doctor Rolla Jaber |
Fair Oaks Skin care center is pleased to welcome Dr. Rolla Jaber.
Dr. Jaber was chief resident of dermatology at Detroit Medical Center prior to returning to her home town in Northern Virginia and joining the team at Fair Oaks. One of the things Dr. Jaber enjoys most about dermatology is the opportunity to help a diverse amount of people in a variety of ways, whether soothing an infant's eczema to providing resolve and maybe even a self-esteem boost to an acne-prone teenager to giving a means of relief to a grandparent with skin cancer. Her love for helping others isn't limited to office hours only. As a member of the Fair Oaks community, Dr. Jaber has made it her goal to involve herself with local schools and youth groups to educate kids and parents on the importance of sun protection and safe sun practices, especially at an early age.
We look forward to introducing you to Dr. Rolla Jaber in person and know she will be a great asset to our team.

| The Aging Factor |

As the skin ages, it characteristically becomes drier and loses its elasticity. Equally, rejuvenating capabilities slow down and the oxygen and nutrient supply decreases along with blood circulation causing cell renewal capabilities to slow down. These changes take place in the dermal layer of the skin. Dermal layer changes depend on three things: Your Age, Heredity, and Your Skin Care Habits. The following chart gives us and idea of our cell renewal time:
Before Age 35 - Every 28 Days
35 Years of Age - 5 Weeks
45 Years of Age - 6 Weeks
55 Years of age - 8 Weeks
65 Years of Age - 9 Weeks
The only area in which we have any control is to establish healthy skin care habits. Bombarded as we are by media messages of perfect skin, figures and lives, it is often difficult to make best purchasing decisions. Television products and Over-The-Counter products may offer low prices, but they are not always bargains.
Formulations can be general, not skin-type specific, and the concentration of active ingredients is extremely low plus one set of products cannot work for everyone. Skin care products purchased from a professional offer several advantages, including programs designed specifically for your skin's age, condition and needs.
And as another alternative "Liquid Face Lift", a quick, non-surgical set of procedures custom tailored to each patient for the purpose of removing wrinkles and fine lines, clarifying skin and creating a healthy, youthful glow. The liquid facelift involves injecting Botox to relax facial muscles and using a filler to restore volume or deep lines. For those who have considered surgery, a liquid facelift requires no down time and may be a better alternative.

| New from Obagi! |
Introducing the new "Elastiderm Décolletage System" for Chest and Neck. This system is a revolutionary skincare system designed to reduce age spots, hyperpigmentation and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the delicate chest and neck area. Sun exposure and the agining process can make this vulnerable skin thinner and prone to discoloration and wrinkles. And because it is a highly visible area, it's important to treat this area to improve and maintain its appearance.
The system includes a skin lightening complex and wrinkle reducing lotion. $25.00 off the original price, while supplies last.
Here at Fair Oaks Skin Care Center we recommend the Obagi- C Rx System which contains professional strength Vitamin C (L- Ascorbic Acid) which is the only system of its kind. Vitamin C has substantial benefits in preventing the skin's accelerated aging process due to sunlight, smoke and other contaminants. |

| May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month |
|
May is skin cancer awareness month and the time to schedule an appointment with your dermatologist for a complete skin exam. A complete exam is recommended once a year starting in the teenage years and two to three times a year if you have had a skin cancer.
I focus on the a,b,c, d 's to see if a mole, a pigmented lesion, is precancerous or cancerous. In my experience the c, or color and change is the most important. We have removed melanomas from patients that are black spots much smaller than a pencil eraser. As a patient, it is important to let your dermatologist know that a mole has changed in color, texture, size or itches. Other skin cancers can look like a new acne pimple or painful dry spot on the face.
Here are some common myths:
Myth #1: Using sunscreen with anything over spf 15 is a waste.
Not True. You need to use at least a broad-spectrum spf 30 daily for protection and higher when you are golfing, playing tennis or at the beach. When chosing a sunscreen be sure they contain the following ingredients: avobenzone, titanium dioxide and mexoryl.
Myth #2: Melanoma is found in people mainly over age 50.
Not True. 26,000 women were diagnosed with melanoma in 2007 as opposed to 16,000 in 1999. We have diagnosed melanomas in patients as young as age 11 and are commonly found in people in their 20s, 30s and 40s.
Myth #3: Tanning booths use safer light than sunlight.
Not True. Using Tanning booths increase your risk of melanoma by 80 fold. Tanning booths emit uva and uvb. Uva light has been found to be more dangerous and damaging to the skin and leads to all types of skin cancer. Many medications such as ibuprofen, tetracycline, doxycycline and antibiotics make you more vulnerable to the sun and especially tanning booths.
