Last weekend's hike of Dam Pond Maritime Reserve with John Turner produced some beautiful haikus. Here are a few.

Trust Receives $15,000 Grant from New York State toward Farms for the Future Initiative  

 

The Conservation Partnership Program (CPP) grant, part of the Environmental Protection Fund, is administered by the Land Trust Alliance.      

    

ground breaking at charnewsAt the end of April, 53 land trusts across the State were awarded funding through Department of Environmental Conservation's CPP program -- for a total of $1.4 million!  The program is designed to assist land trusts with operational growth and project support.  The $15,000 awarded to the Peconic Land Trust is in support of our Farms for the Future Initiative.   

 

Assemblyman Fred Thiele, Jr. said in congratulating the Trust on its award: "The East End's beauty and farming heritage, in many ways, can be attributed to the Peconic Land Trust." Thank you to Assemblyman Thiele, State Senator Ken LaValle, the NYS DEC and the Land Trust Alliance for their support of our conservation efforts.

Green Theatre Collective's The Tempest: as you like itShakespeare will make a return engagement to Quail Hill Farm's Apple Orchard this summer, when the Green Theatre Collective mounts its production of The Tempest, July 18 through 22. Picnics are encouraged. For more info . . .       

  

The Kitchn Series: Can't make it to the farm this season? Online blog The Kitchn (an online blog devoted to cooking from Apartment Therapy) is running a monthly serial following the 2012 season at Quail Hill Farm. The first episode is now available.  

 

"American Meat" Screening: Scott Chaskey and Balsam Farms' Alex Balsam and Ian Calder-Piedmonte will take part in a panel discussion after the screening of American Meat, a documentary on the changing landscape of agriculture, at Guild Hall on Saturday, May 19th. Also joining Scott, Alex and Ian will be Chef Joe Realmuto and filmmaker Graham Meriwether.  Tickets for the film and panel are $10/advance and $12/door.  

 

After the screening and panel, there will be a separate reception at Nick and Toni's with local food, wine and beer. $25/person for the reception. Click here to purchase tickets for the reception.

 News from the Agricultural Center at Charnews Farm  and the North Fork 

 


Community Gardens are taking shape. This summer,charnews garden we have over 40 individuals/families taking part in the Agricultural Center's Community gardens -- a sold out program!  Stop by to see the diversity of vegetables and flowers being cultivated by your friends and neighbors.

Fridays at the Farm: Honey Dews and Dirt Devils are cleaning up -- painting, fixing, pruning. They are a community gardenerswonderful and industrious group -- contact Denise Markut if you are interested in joining their ranks this summer.

The Farmers: We are proud to welcome back Sang Lee Farms, Browder's Birds and Invincible Summer Farm this growing season at the Ag Center; and Roderick Brown to the fields at the Peconic Land Trust Vineyard in Cutchogue.


Porch & Patio Tour to benefit the Trust: The Elegant Bed and Breakfasts of the North Fork are hosting a "Porch and Patio" Tour at five North Fork locations on Saturday, June 9. Proceeds from the tour will benefit the Trust's conservation work. Visit www.bbNOFO.com for more information.

School Programs: The Ag Center is continuing its partnerships with both the Southold School District and Mary Jo Weinig's Read a Recipe afterschool program. This Spring, students from Southold's 4th grade class are coming to the farm to learn about LI's agriculture history and gardening. The plan is for them to return in the fall as 5th graders and harvest the potatoes they are planting this spring.

The Ag Center also continues to partner with the Read a Recipe program on their unique curriculum combining nutrition and literacy. Contact Denise Markut for more info on these educational programs.

Bridge Gardens News       

 

Spring Lecture Series: The final program of our popular series on sustainable design will be on Sunday, May 20 and will feature an amazing panel of design professionals: Ed Krug, Peter Sabbeth, Carloyn Tierney and Kati Curtis. This will be standing room only, RSVPs required. More details (left column).   

 

Vegetable Gardens: Planted in 2011, this year the vegetable gardens at Bridge Gardens have doubled in size. Come and see what's new: peas are on their way, beets and carrots are up, and beautiful heirloom Yugoslavian red bibb lettuce is reaching to the sky.  Early blooming alliums are also bursting with magenta color.

 

Bamboo Room: Closed since 2010, the "secret"  bamboo room  is open again. Come explore this beautiful and contemplative space -- and see the new bamboo bench and gate built by the Gardens staff and volunteers.  

 

Volunteers: Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers this spring at the Gardens, including John Witzenbocker, Sam Masters, Amy Young, Joe Lane and Bobby Cohen, all of whom have been helping in  readying the gardens and at the Lecture Series. We couldn't have done it without your help! 

 

Special Thanks to our Corporate Volunteers and Sponsors, who've helped us get the Gardens into shape over the winter and spring: Marders, Heirloom Gardens, Mahoney Tree Farm and Macy's.     

 

Parrish's Landscape Pleasures Tour: This year, Bridge Gardens will be one of the visits on the tour on Sunday, June 10. Visit www.parrishart.org for more information and to purchase tickets.  

     

Weekday access to the Gardens start on May 30! The Gardens will be open Wednesdays through Sundays all summer long.
