A Note From Rick . . .
Nothing looks tidier than a garden with crisp edges along bed lines and paths. This time of year, before most plants have leafed out, edges are a garden feature in themselves and an important design element.
Gardeners have differing opinions about mulching. Some do, some don't. I mulch for weed suppression, moisture retention, and labor reduction. Also, in the long run, mulching improves soil quality. As it breaks down, it adds organic matter to the soil.
This spring, with the purchase of a riding mower, push mower, and trimmer, we've started taking care of Bridge Gardens' lawns ourselves. We're experimenting with mowing techniques, fertilizers, and seed mixes and hope to develop a lawn care regimen for Bridge Gardens that will give us beautiful lawns sustainably.
Also, look for changes in the mauve, white, and coral beds of the rose garden this year. They've been planted with fewer roses than before, spaced out so they can achieve their full size and shape. Only disease-resistant varieties have been planted or transplanted this year. Over the season, these and the roses in the other color beds will be evaluated for vigor, resistance to black spot and powdery mildew, ease of care, and beauty.
See you around the garden,
Rick

Flower of the Month: Daffodil
May's flower is most definitely the daffodil. There are hundreds around the Gardens and many varieties are in full bloom.

The Marieke is an early, bright yellow large-cup flower of notable size and stature and impressive even in bud.
The Petrel is just coming into bloom now with several small ivory flowers, graceful in all respects.

The Pistachio is a mid-season large cup with light green-yellow petals and a creamy yellow trumpet.
Their only rival is the Fritillaria persica, whose plum-covered bell-shaped flowers are a standout in the middle of a drift of Jamestown daffodils.
