Peconic Land Trust
Conservation Accomplishments
in 2010
In addition to its education and public policy work during 2010, the Peconic Land Trust worked with landowners, local governments partner organizations and communities to conserve an additional 59 acres on Long Island's East End. This represents eight separate projects located in the towns of Southampton, East Hampton, Shelter Island and Southold.
The largest conservation project was completed last August when the Trust assisted the Town of Southold with the purchase of development rights on just over 29 acres in Peconic, owned by Zip Peconic Wells LLC. Zip sold the development rights to the Town and continues to lease the farmland to a local farmer. This property adjoins a vineyard previously protected by the Trust in the 1990s, resulting in an assemblage of nearly 70 acres of protected farmland. The Trust has w orked closely with Southold Town for many years and collaborated on numerous projects.
The Trust also worked closely with the Sagaponack community and beyond, Suffolk County, Southampton Town, and the Northeast Land Trust Consortium of the Pew Charitable Trust to purchase the Hopping farmland in Sagaponack. Hundreds of donors contributed to this public/private partnership to ensure that Jennifer and Jim Pike's farmstand would continue to provide the community with fresh produce for the foreseeable future. The Trust completed the acquisition with a final payment to the Hopping family in December 2010 using its revolving fund ahead of a scheduled final payment date of March 2011.
The Trust was also instrumental in expanding the conservation area of the Seymour family on Shelter Island, when the family amended an existing conservation easement by adding another 2.5 acres. This brings the total acreage conserved by the Seymours to approximately 23 acres and provides Shelter Island residents with a roadside viewshed and scenic open space.
Another Bridgehampton project of note involved a group of neighbors concerned with the impending development of a nearby building lot. The group got together and donated funds that allowed the Trust to purchase and conserve a 2.75-acre parcel now called Cammann Preserve II. The new preserve adjoins other conserved lands off Ocean Road that now total over 10 acres, thereby expanding upon a conservation area that ensures the permanent protection of scenic views, habitat for local flora and fauna, and a small nursery operation.

Public Policy Update:
White House Releases America's Great Outdoors Report and Land Trust Lobby Day in Albany set for March 14
On February 17, the landmark America's Great Outdoors Report was introduced by President Obama at a reception at the White House. At the introduction, the President gave a boost to voluntary conservation of private land by mentioning the work of the land trust community in his remarks and the incorporation of land trust initiatives in the final report, which includes proposals to extend the enhanced tax incentives for conservation easement donations beyond 2011, fully funding the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), and focusing a portion of LWCF on innovative projects that support urban parks, community green spaces, and large-scale land conservation. Mr. Obama said at the reception: "at a time when America's open spaces are controlled by a patchwork of groups, from government to land trusts to private citizens, it's clear that conservation in the 21st century is going to take more than what we can do here in Washington . . . Meeting the new test of environmental stewardship means finding the best ideas at the grassroots level, it means helping states, communities and nonprofits protect their own resources, and it means figuring out how the federal government can be a better partner in those efforts." The report drew inspiration from hundreds of land trust participants at America's Great Outdoors listening sessions from around the country and from submissions to the initiative's website. Thank you to all who participated by sharing your ideas. To learn more about America's Great Outdoors initiative, and to read the report, visit the Department of Interiors website at http://americasgreatoutdoors.gov. Land Trusts join with Friends of New York's Environment for Lobby Day in Albany: March 14 This year, the Land Trust Alliance's New York delegation will join with the broader conservation/environmental coalition, Friends of New York's Environment, for a joint lobby day in Albany to ask legislators to support Governor Cuomo's executive budget for FY2011/2012 as it relates to funding for the Environmental Protection Fund. The Governor's budget for the most part preserves EPF funding at 2010/2011 levels, $134 million -- a significant victory for the environmental community in light of the current economic conditions. Last year, the EPF was disproportionately impacted, with cuts of 37% versus the previous year, and far less than the $220 million requested.
A press conference is scheduled in the morning to announce the Community Partnership Program grants, funds administered by the Land Trust Alliance to land trusts for capacity growth through the EPF. The Peconic Land Trust has received funding through this program on numerous occasions, most recently in 2010. Please join us in celebrating all the good work that is funded through this program.
Also, the chairs of both the Assembly and Senate Environmental Conservation Committees are expected to attend the morning session to meet with us: Assemblyman Robert Sweeney and Senator Mark Grisanti. It's a great opportunity for us to voice our concerns as a group on the EPF and to provide the Chairs with our support as the tough negotiations on the budget begin.
If you would like to join us in Albany on March 14, or would just like to learn more about the issues, please contact Julie Zaykowski at 631.283.3195. We hope to see you in Albany. If you can't join us in Albany, please reach out to your local representatives and ask for their support on the EPF.To learn more about how the Environmental Protection Fund has contributed to enhancing our economy through the protection of working farms, natural lands, clean drinking water, visit www.keepprotectingny.org. There you can find fact sheets on all the counties in New York State and the impact of the EPF.
