Give2Land: Times Square Campaign to Support Land Conservation

Peconic Land Trust partners with five local land trusts and the Land Trust Alliance in a video billboard over the holiday season.

Next time you are in Times Square, don't forget to look marissa with appleup. The Peconic Land Trust, along with the Land Trust Alliance, the Dutchess Land Conservancy, New Jersey Conservation Foundation, Scenic Hudson, Open Space Institute and Westchester Land Trust, have partnered on a Give2Land campaign

The video billboard, a public service announcement (PSA) opportunity generously  presented to the Trust by Neutron Media and CBS, runs health walkon the CBS jumbo-tron, located on 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues (on the north side of the street). The 15-second PSA will run once each hour, for a minimum of 18 hours daily through New Year's Eve.

With the message Land Gives . . . and rotating images representing Farms/Food, Nature, Recreation/Health, and Water; the campaign reiterates the message that Land Trusts Save Land. The Give2Land website features more information on the campaign as well as links to the seven sponsoring waterorganizations and a "find your local land trusts" zip code search -- making this a true gift to land conservation across the world during the holiday season.

For more information on this campaign -- and to view the video -- visit the Trust website or www.Give2Land.org. And remember, look up the next time you are in Times Square.

presented with a $1,000 donation by Hamptons Gym Corp
in honor of WEHM DJ Anthony's weight loss as part of the Biggest Loser Competition. Though Anthony came in second place to fellow DJ Harry -- who was working hard on behalf of Fighting Chance -- the weight loss by both guys was truly impressive -- 84 pounds!

Anthony has been a true supporter of the Trust and our mission -- talking about our work on the radio, on facebook, and even joining us for one of our weekly staff meetings!!!

Congratulations to both Anthony and Harry for getting in shape, getting healthy, and promoting fresh fruits and vegetables!

And thank you HGC and WEHM for your support of the Peconic Land Trust, Fighting Chance and our local community.

Good News! Trust Receives Grant from  the Joyce & Irving Goldman Family Foundation

Grant will support two agricultural projects:
Quail Hill Farm Apprentice program and
infrastructure upgrades at Charnews Farm.

The Peconic Land Trust has been awarded a $115,000 grant from the Joyce and Irving Goldman Family Foundation. Based in New York City, the foundation recently expanded its priorities to include sustainable agriculture. They reached out to the Peconic Land Trust to explore ways to support both land charnews gardenpreservation and opportunities for young farmers on Eastern Long  Island. After tours of several properties and discussions with staff on current projects and goals, the Trust was invited by the foundation to submit a proposal.

The Foundation chose to fund agricultural-based projects at two of our properties: Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett and Charnews Farms in Southold.

At Quail Hill Farm, the Foundation will fund our ApprenticeKatie and Amanda Program in 2011. The Apprentice Program at Quail Hill was established to teach and encourage a greater awareness of sustainable farming practices and to increase cooperation between the community and farming. Each spring, the program hires four apprentices for the growing season. To date, about 100 new farmers have taken part in the apprentice program, and we can trace approximately 30 former apprentices who are presently active in farming, community gardens or food security programs in the U.S. and Canada.

At the Peconic Land Trust's Agricultural Center at Charnews Farm, the Foundation will fund some needed infrastructure upgrades that will help the Trust continue to use the farm as an educational resource and incubator for agriculture. Currently, there are three -- and soon to be four -- on-site farmers at the Trust's Charnews Field ViewAgricultural Center, as well as a community garden and learning garden program. Infrastructure upgrades supported by the grant, including irrigation and deer fencing, are necessary to ensure the viability of new farm operations.

We are grateful to the Joyce and Irving Goldman Family Foundation for reaching out to us and for their support of our ongoing agricultural projects on the East End.
