Trust Announces the Sale of the Manorville Horse Farm
Under threat of development, the Trust purchased the property to hold
until a conservation buyer could be found.
In March 2007, the Peconic Land Trust p urchased the Williams Horse Farm, a 15.3-acre farm property located in the center of the Manorville farm belt. At that time, the farm was under threat of development. The property sits within a significant agricultural corridor in the Town of Brookhaven, and its loss would have been detrimental to the area's rural character. Simultaneous with the acquisition in 2007, the Trust sold the land's development rights to the Town--thus protecting the property in perpetuity.
Since then, the Trust has worked with the current leaseholder to maintain the property as an active horse farm.
On October 8, 2010, the Trust sold the protected farmland to a young farm couple -- Christopher Nellen and Elizabeth Baron -- who intend to continue the horse operation as well as introduce other agricultural activities to the land, including vegetable crops and a bee-keeping operation.
"This is a wonderful outcome for this property," said Project Manager Stephen Searl. "This is a significant farm operation in the Town of Brookhaven, and its continuation as a farming operation was of prime importance to the Trust. With this sale, we were able to achieve our two stated goals from the inception: protection of the agricultural property (through the sale of development rights to the Town) and conveyance of the property to a conservation buyer with an interest in agriculture."

New Suffolk Waterfront Fund Poised to Complete Acquisition
...loans from The Conservation Fund
and donations from individuals and grants from foundations make possible the transfer of property by December 2010 deadline
The Peconic Land Trust is pleased to announce that the non-profit New Suffolk Waterfront Fund (Fund) will acquire the 5.5-acre New Suffolk Waterfront parcel, overlooking Cutchogue Harbor by the end of the year. The Trust purchased the property in December of 2007. At the time of acquisition, an expanded boat storage operation was being proposed for the waterfront; as an alternative, local residents expressed serious interest in acquiring the property for public purposes. To assist the community, the Trust drew from its revolving fund and other Trust assets to acquire the property, and then spent the past three years working with the Fund and the broader community to develop a conservation plan for the waterfront. The Conservation Fund, a national conservation organization that assists communities to acquire and protect landscapes valued for recreation, wildlife habitat, history and more, will provide a short-term loan to the New Suffolk Waterfront Fund to bridge its current fundraising gap. In addition, the Waterfront Fund has received support from over 500 individuals, as well as philanthropic organizations including the Laura P. Winship Fund at the San Diego Foundation. "We are very pleased that we have been able to assist the community in realizing a dream to protect this waterfront, long a source of community pride and interest, available to them while they undertook a fundraising initiative. We wish the New Suffolk Waterfront Fund all the best as they take on the next phase of life for this important, historic property," said Trust Vice President Tim Caufield. To learn more about the New Suffolk Waterfront Fund's plans for the property, please visit their website at www.newsuffolkwaterfrontfund.org.
