Spotlight: Conservation Programs

Suffolk County, Shelter Island and Trust Partner with Sylvester Manor on Conservation
sylvester manor press conference
Trust's Hoot Sherman, Supervisor James Dougherty, County Executive Steve Levy, Sylvester Manor's Bennett Kosnesni, Trust's Sara Gordon

On September 13, the Peconic Land Trust joined with Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, Shelter Island Town Supervisor James Dougherty, and a fifteenth-generation decendent of Sylvester Manor's original owners -- Bennett Konesni, founder and resident executive director of Sylvester Manor Educational Farm, nephew of the current owner, Eben Fiske Ostby -- to announce the conservation of a 26.4 acre farm field at Sylvester Manor that is part of a family-owned, 243-acre educational farm on Shelter Island. The project is expected to close in the next few months.

The County and Town are purchasing the development rights for $2.4 million, with the assistance of a $1.09 million grant received by Suffolk County for this project from the Federal Farm and Ra
nchlands Protection Program. "The purchase of development rights at Sylvester Manor is, in effect, the preservation of 358 years of Long Island's history," said Levy. "The agriculture and the educational program at the farm are a blessing to Suffolk and Shelter Island residents and visitors who regularly support the facility, and we are proud to preserve all of this for future generations."

Bennett added: "This
collaboration--to preserve 26 acres of our historic fields--reflects what Sylvester Manor Educational Farm is all about: bringing people together to celebrate and explore history, food, culture, and place."

In December 2009, Eben Fiske Ostby donated a conservation easement to the Peconic Land Trust on 22 acres of Sylvester Manor lands along Gardiners Creek; the easement has substantial scenic, wetland habitat, agricultural, cultural and historic value, and contributes to the protection of the Island's vulnerable aquifer.

"Suffolk County and the Town of Shelter Island are playing a key role in this effort, one that represents a wonderful legacy for this family," said Trust President John v.H. Halsey regarding the new conservation effort. "The future of this property, as envisioned by Eben and Bennett, not only preserves the family's rich traditions but also creates an educational program linked to a working farm that sustains our agricultural heritage for future generations."  The Trust is continuing to work with the family, the community and municipal partners to facilitate further conservation of Sylvester Manor lands, and to support establishment and growth of the not-for-profit
Sylvester Manor Educational Farm.
