Sylvester Manor
A New Life for an Historic Property

manor house tourThis past June, the Trust was fortunate to be invited to host our annual Peconinic at historic Sylvester Manor, a 243-acre property that includes farmland and meadows, a Manor house with gardens, two cemeteries, and now home to a community supported agriculture farm started by Bennett Konesni, the nephew of the manor's owner Eben Fiske Ostby -- both are direct descendants of the Manor's founder, Nathaniel Sylvester.

Sylvester Manor has been in
single family ownership since 1652.

lunch at Peconinic

The 2010 Peconinic was one of the most successful gatherin
gs of Trust supporters and friends in our nearly 28 year history. Over 300 people came to the pot-luck Free Seedlingspicnic, feasted on fried chicken and baked hams, turkey breast and a wide assortment of salads, beans, fresh vegetables, fruit, and more. Bennett's band, the Free Seedlings, provided wonderful acoustic bluegrass music, and tours of the property -- including the house and gardens, the farm, and the Quaker and Slave cemeteries - gave everyone a wonderful peek at this unique property. Thank you to our wonderful tour guides: Mac Griswold, Patricia Shillingberg, Jim Pugh, Don sylvester manor csaShillingberg, Kenton van Boer, Nancy Gilbert, Richard Wines, and crew Andrew, Jane, Connie and Zoe from Sylvester Manor's Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farm, now in its second year of operation growing over 200 varieties of vegetables and flowers for 60 member families, a retail stand and local restaurants.

The Trust is working with Mr. Ostby on a conservation plan for the property -- the first part of which was completed at the end osylvester manor windmillf 2009 with a donation to the Trust of a conservation easement on 22 acres of land along Gardiner Creek contributing to the protection of the Island's aquifer, wetlands, woodlands and scenic vistas. Mr. Ostby and Bennett have founded a not-for-profit corporation, Sylvester Manor Educational Farm, that is working with the family to preserve, restore, manage and sustain the Manor's unique landscape.

Sylvester Manor provides opportunities for apprentice and volunteer farm workers through World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (wwoof.org); welcomes school and camp group visits; offers participatory workshops in food, folk arts, history, and culture;and hosts community events including the annual Plant & Sing harvest festival.
