Hunger in the News
Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon has been making the news! Deputy Director Jessica Chanay was interviewed by The Central Oregonian about proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and how this would affect Oregonians.

Says Jessica, "We continue to have a pretty big hunger problem in our state, and the SNAP program is one of the main ways that we are able to keep people from falling into deeper hunger."

Also in the news, a recent estimate by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities shows the difference that safety net programs are making in our nation. Without them, the poverty rate would have been nearly twice as high in 2010.
Supporting our work is a piece of cake!
We have two delicious foodie events for you this September and both of them support Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon.

Like the sound of that? Well, if you plan to attend Feast Portland and can't decide which of the 30+ events to hit, we have a recommendation. The Feast Portland Oregon Bounty Grand Tasting takes over Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland on Sept. 21st and 22nd. Meet great chefs and winemakers, sample everything and get a taste of what our state does best: food!

And if you have a sweet tooth?
The Portland Pastry Chefs Association is serving up the sweetest treats at its 1st annual Cakewalk on Sept. 9th. The cakewalk features more than 30 great local vendors! (Over-21 only please).
Back to School? Don't forget meal applications!
As kids head back to school, many parents are making a list and checking it twice to make sure everything is in place.

Don't forget school meal applications!
1. When families fill out applications for free and reduced-price meals, kids who qualify will get nutritious meals on the first day of school.
2. Schools need application information early so they know how many kids qualify for free and reduced meals. This percentage determines the level of services a school can offer students (Title I), and helps qualify neighborhoods to serve for both after school and summer meal programs.

Deadline: October is the month that determines most services, so applications should be returned early!

Summer isn't over yet!

Kids can still get free meals and fun at summer feeding sites in Salem and Portland until the end of August. Find a meal site near you:

Congress in recess, Farm Bill unfinished
While the current farm bill expires September 30th, Congress has not yet reached agreement on a bill.

Oregon Senators and Representatives are back home for their August recess. Let them know how important SNAP is for Oregonians. We will continue to monitor these discussions and send updates as they are available. Stay tuned!
