Boulder Nordic Sport News
Ski season is here! Nordic centers around the country are firing up the grooming equipment and skis everywhere are getting a fresh coat of wax.
Speaking of great things, Boulder Nordic Sport is celebrating its 5th anniversary and kicking off operations in our new Boulder store with a party on Saturday, November 12. We'll have double poling contests, a tent sale and a happy hour with appetizers, margaritas and beer. It has all the makings of a good time. Stop by if you can and celebrate with us!
As many of you may have heard, the US Cross Country Ski Team is facing some major budget constraints this season. In spite of many recent successes on the World Cup, at the Olympics and World Championships, many US Ski Team members will not get any funding this season to compete. US National Team coaches Pete Vordenberg and Matt Whitcomb through the National Nordic Foundation (NNF) are hard at work to remedy this situation. Please scroll down for a message from Pete and Matt in regards to their "Drive for 25" campaign. As members of the nordic community ourselves, the staff at BNS all wish Matt, Pete and the athletes of the US Ski Team the best of luck finding the funds to keep American skiers on the podium.
This edition of BNS News also includes the very first edition of Knut's Corner, our Q & A column with the head of the Norwegian Ski Federation's Service Team. We've already had some great questions come in and we're looking forward to many more.
Enjoy the early-season snow--West Yellowstone is just around the corner. Hope to see you out there!
--The BNS Team

November 12: Party Time in Boulder from 10am to 6pm
This past October marked five years since Nathan Schultz started BNS inside a local bike shop. Thanks to our great customers, our business has grown and grown and now we're proud to announce the grand opening of our new 6000 square foot Flagship Store in Boulder, CO.
To celebrate these two milestones, we're throwing a party at 3600 Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder. Plans call for giveaways, a tent sale, BNS Mobile open house, double pole contests on our Vasa Ergometer and more.
Happy Hour from 4-6
We will be teaming up with Pica's Mexican Taqueria, from just down the street, for BNS Happy Hour. For those old enough, Pica's will supply margaritas and we'll bring the beer. Appetizers will be available for everyone along with Pica's chips, salsa and guacamole available all day.
Pica's is a favorite of the BNS staff and we're looking forward to sharing their fantastic food and potent margaritas with you.

Drive for 25

A Message from Pete Vordenberg and Matt Whitcomb
What: 4000 American cross country ski enthusiasts backing their nation's developing skiers on a single day.
When: November 15th, 2011
How: There are two ways to be involved. The most impactful involvement is to become a "D Two Five Ambassador" and get at least ten of your friends to agree to donate on November 15th. Send the email addresses of your friends to us and we will remind them. Or, the simplest way is to log onto www.ccgeneralfund.causevox.com and donate $25 on November 15th.
Why:U.S. cross country skiing is in financial trouble. While we have improved from a nation that seldom put a single skier in the top 15 on the World Cup to a nation with World Cup and World Championship podiums, while we are currently operating at a budget of less than a tenth of our toughest competitors. And more importantly, our budget shortfalls are making it impossible for our younger developing athletes to afford the racing opportunities they require to compete among the best.
Who: You. NNF, the National Nordic Foundation is stepping up to fill these budget short fall. The NNF depends on you.
On November 15th, we are going to engage 4,000 members of the U.S. ski community to support our top developing athletes from the J1 to World Cup level. We would like to ask you to be involved in this effort. All of you already donate your time, money and energy to this sport. And that is why we need your help. You are already invested in the success of your athletes and the success of U.S. skiing.
The National Nordic Foundation's "Drive for 25" on November 15th is a fundraiser based on as many $25 donations possible in a single day.
There are two ways to be involved. One, donate on November 15th at www.ccgeneralfund.causevox.com or sign up to become a Drive for 25 Ambassador. To agree to become an ambassador, we need an email from you that requests to be added as a Drive for 25 Ambassador. We're in need of 400 ambassadors, so please give this a hard look. As an ambassador, you become the make or break link--not only do we need a $25 donation from you to NNF on November 15th, but we need you to provide us with a list of email addresses of at least 10 individuals also agreeing to donate by November 5th. More than 10 names is highly encouraged, but 10 is the minimum. The generated email list of donors will be sent a special NNF donation link on November 10th, and reminded again via email on the 14th and 15th, the donation day. The list will then be destroyed. Imagine the impact of 1,000 people donating on a single day. Now imagine 4,000 people, because activating 4,000 donors is our goal. On November 15th, we will all tune in to causevox through www.NCCSEF.org or directly at www.ccgeneralfund.causevox.com to watch the community stand up.
You already make a difference. Let's help others make a difference too. Please join us at a time when money is tight, and life is busy. We have dozens of athletes skiing at a level that demands European racing exposure, but they are stuck in fundraising mud. Let's help them. Much more than a fundraiser, it is an activation of our entire community. Let it be large.
Thank you. Please email to sign up or with any questions,
Matt Whitcomb

Knut's Corner

ACL's, Gallium and Paddle Boarding Knut Nystad is the cheif of the Norwegian Ski Federation Service Team and a friend of ours. This year, Knut will be answering some of your questions about skiing, service and equipment in our BNS Newsletters. To submit a question, please send it to knut@bouldernordic.com. Here's the first batch of questions from our customers. Keep 'em coming!
Hi Knut, I am working my way back into shape from two knee surgeries, (right knee partial replacement, and a left knee ACL repair) both over 1 year now. I just bought a pair of rollerskis and went on my first 17 mile gentle rolling course. What I noticed mostly was how weak my ankles were and how sore my right outer shin/lower ankle is. Do you have any specific technique, that would help me target my ankles? I can't run anymore, I bike 3 days a week.
Thanks, Colleen (13 Birkies)
Hello Colleen, Thanks for writing! Great to hear that you are not giving up! That is the spirit - two new knees, but still going strong. The reason why you feel that your ankles are weak and that the shin/lower ankle is sore is most likely because you are new to roller skiing. I bet you do not feel 100% confident on those skinny rolling sticks, and hence your muscles are firing left and right to try to keep you in balance. Funny thing, but the body does not want to fall - the head has told it so because it hurts. So, the best tip is just to head on out there again and really focus on balance. It is better to start working on technique and gain balance first, instead of heading out on long workouts. What you feel in the ankles are symptoms; the real problem is most likely lack of balance and confidence to your technique. Best of luck! Make it 14 birkies this winter.
Knut, I have a few questions about Gallium:
--Which of the new Gallium Flouro liquids or top layers would be suitable for dry, cold, powdery Colorado conditions? To be honest with you, we have had bettter luck with the liquids when it is humid, but they have informed me that there is a new cold liquid that should do the trick. We have yet to try this out. The cold powder also seems to work well. When it comes to recommending wax it is really hard without having tested it personally. Head on out there and play around with the products and compare them to other products that you know. Many times the secret is not only the product, but how you use it! Test, measure, learn, repeat!
--Would they perform any better than BNS's recommendations from last year for final layers of Ski Go C105 Solid and/or Holmenkol Speed Block Mid, which both worked pretty well in cold (teens to low 20's F) conditions? Again - both combos are great - but you have to find the right conditions for them. The only way to know is by testing and trying on skis that are zeroed out. I do not like to guess, so I trust the local lads that test if I do not have the opportunity to test myself. The only way to get better is to try new things and be curious. That's the only way you will learn what is the best for your conditions, which may vary extremely from day to day, or from month to month. Get in the habit of testing and documenting the results. After a few tests you are already on your way to become a kick-ass tester and waxer.
--Why is the Gallium super Fluro so expensive? I wish I knew! If I found the secret I would start making my own wax and retire to sand, palms and golf. My guess is that the materials and process are very expensive. There are a lot of products out there that cost less and keep in mind that it is not always the most expensive that is the best!
Thank you and Regards, Eric
Hi Knut, I appreciate you making yourself available for Q&A at BNS. I't s a great privilege and honor to be able to address such a knowledgeable person directly. I have great curiosity regarding Stand Up Paddle and how that might better serve my skate ski season? I was wondering how you all approached this kind of cross-training and if you considered it at all beneficial. I have done a few experiments myself and find it develops a great deal of extra back muscles I'd normally not be using. But I want to make sure I am not slowing up my ski game? Million thanks, Enrique
Hello Enrique,
I must admit that I have never tried Stand Up Paddle myself and of course, before I forget, thanks for the compliments.
Any kind of cro ss training that trains the entire body is most likely going to help your skiing. I would imagine that Stand Up Paddle works both your back and your stomach, which should in theory be great for skiing. In most all techniques you start by "hanging" on your poles and hence you initially pull with your stomach. By using the bigger muscle groups, you should be able to ski faster and more efficiently--IF you are able to ski with the correct technique that allows you to use your larger muscle groups. A strong upper body will also allow you to keep your body in a strong position during the entire duration of a race. Most racers out there "collapse" in the upper body when they get tired - looking more like the hunch back of Notre Dame. Keep up the good work! Cross- training is motivating so do not fear that you are slowing up your ski game.

Holmenkol Natural Wax
Here's something that we're really excited about. Not only is Holmenkol Natural Wax completely biodegradable and solvent-free, it's fast! Last year, our race service team tested Natural Wax Fluid against some pure flouros and found it to be very competitive.
Both the Natural Wax Stick and Fluid are great options for those who aren't able to hot wax their skis very often. Super easy to apply, you can keep your skis running fast between trips to the shop or wax bench. Natural Wax Fluid is also a perfect product for keeping your waxless skis ice-free.
Also available as a paraffin for hot waxing, Holmenkol Natural Wax is an easy, affordable and environmentally-friendly way to keep your skis in great shape--all season long.
Bjorn Daehlie Olympic Jacket
This is the first season that we've carried Bjorn Daehlie and are glad we've got their stuff in the store! There's a reason that the US Ski Team uses Bjorn products. Not only do they look great, but this tech-wear is incredibly functional.
