What Makes an Amazing Ski? |
| By: Zach Caldwell
|
 |
Kris Freeman has one really amazing pair of skis. He's got lots of good skis, but just one that is really amazing, and really amazing in just about all conditions.
Last May when Nathan and I were testing skis at the US Ski Team camp in Whistler we got to ski on a lot of good skis. We had a whole bunch of next year's Peltonens to try out. We were also skiing on a bunch of new Madshus skis for Leif Zimmerman and Noah Hoffman. We identified some really good skis and then we played with binding position (thanks to NIS plates) to find the "sweet spot" on the pairs that we really liked. When we were satisfied that we had some great skis I suggested that I should take a spin on Kris's "261" (last three digits of the serial number) ski as a reference. After all, we know that this ski is happy running at the front end of a World Cup field. As references go we had reason to believe that the bar was set pretty high. Sure enough, stepping onto the 261 ski was like..., well..., it was different. Amazing. That's what it was.

Lower Pricing on Training Plans and
Expanded Staff for BNS Coaching Program
Need some fresh training ideas? Want to optimize your limited training time so you can achieve your goals? Coaching can help you enjoy your sport and discover your potential by educating you, helping you set goals and plan training, and analyzing your progress.
For the past two years our passion for cross country skiing has been consumed by the details of establishing the best ski selection and stone grinding services in the country. While we continue to develop new ideas and improve these services, we are excited to have the time and resources to dedicate ourselves to build the best coaching program in the country, too.
We recently added two new coaches to our staff and lowered pricing on training plans. Our coaching staff now includes Nathan Schultz, Adam St Pierre, M.S. and Eric Pepper. Zach Caldwell will also be taking on a limited number of clients under the BNS program. Each of our coaches has extensive experience as a coach and as an athlete and can help you achieve your goals.

Tips for Travel with Stricter Airline Baggage Regulations |
|
by Nathan Schultz |
 |
Avoid Hassles, Save Money by Shipping Skis Airline travel with a quiver full of skis has never been easy, but tightened baggage regulations and enforcement have dramatically changed things and made shipping skis ahead of time much more attractive. Expect to pay significant airline fees for even lightweight bags and hefty fees for bags stuffed with multiple pairs.
Each airline is different, but our experiences over the summer show that most airlines are charging around $15-$50 for a lightweight ski bag and $50-$100 for a heavyweight. Each airline's policy varies, though, so check the links below to find out the scoop before you fly.
We ship about 1200 pairs of skis out of the shop each year and have learned a few tricks to make shipping safe, inexpensive and efficient:
- INSURE YOUR PACKAGE FOR FULL REPLACEMENT VALUE
- Ship in a bag or box. Boxes offer more protection and a bag will cost extra due to the "non-rectangular parcel" surcharge.
- Bundle skis together in pairs, bases facing each other.
- Wrap multiple pairs together using shrink wrap to give added strength.
- Wrap the binding in shrink wrap to hold binding flex plates in place.
- Ensure the skis cannot move around in the box by placing rolled up newspaper or other packaging material in voids.
- Bubble wrap, packaging peanuts, etc are ineffective and a waste of time. Skis are tough and can easily withstand anything bubble wrap will stop. Bubble wrap will not help in a life-threatening crash.
- Ship through a business that has a commercial account with UPS, Fedex or USPS. This will save 20-50% off retail rates that you pay at a packaging store.
