Training Tips
by Nathan Schultz
Time to Get Specific

A few tips to consider as you lay down your plan for training and the winter that is only a few weeks away.  If you haven't done it already, sit down and spend 20 minutes making a plan for this winter.  You'll find it makes a big difference.

  • Plan. Establish goals and plan specifically how to achieve them. Plan long-term and break the plan into smaller and smaller blocks, with each block having specific goals. Have a plan for your daily workouts, pre-race routine and race strategy. Once you have a plan, all you have to do is execute, there is no need to figure out what to do and it becomes harder to procrastinate. This gives you confidence and stability in your preparation.
  • Get Specific. We're at the point in the year where training should develop a ski-specific focus to make the transition to snow quick and easy, so put ski-specific motions into your workouts at least 2 or 3 times each week.  Ski-walking/bounding with poles, rollerboard, rollerskiing, pull-ups, dips and stretch cords are all simple ways to incorporate skiing into dryland training.
  • Strength & Rollerskiing. Balance & Strength are two of the biggest weaknesses in most North American skiers. Core strength is vital because it holds the body in position and provides a stable platform for the extremities to push. Rollerskiing in the summer and fall dramatically improves balance and specific strength.
  • Technique. It's hugely important, but should not take away from other training. Spring and Summer are the best times to work on technique. Focus on a single element in short bursts, then once you have mastered that isolated issue, move onto the next.
  • Listen to Your Body: Rest. What you do immediately after workouts and during the rest of your day is at least as important as your workout. Eat well, hydrate, sleep and adjust training to correspond to the demands and stresses of the rest of your life.

Training Plans and Coaching
Lower Pricing on Training Plans and
Expanded Staff for BNS Coaching Program

Need some fresh training ideas?  Want to optimize your limited training time so you can achieve your goals?  Coaching can help you enjoy your sport and discover your potential by educating you, helping you set goals and plan training, and analyzing your progress.

For the past two years our passion for cross country skiing has been consumed by the details of establishing the best ski selection and stone grinding services in the country.  While we continue to develop new ideas and improve these services, we are excited to have the time and resources to dedicate ourselves to build the best coaching program in the country, too.

We recently added two new coaches to our staff and lowered pricing on training plans.  Our coaching staff now includes Nathan Schultz, Adam St Pierre,
M.S. and Eric Pepper.  Zach Caldwell will also be taking on a limited number of clients under the BNS program.  Each of our coaches has extensive experience as a coach and as an athlete and can help you achieve your goals.

Team BNS Training Group
Fall Training Group Sessions September - November

Fall is here and we've revved things up again with our Team BNS training group.  The group meets three times per week through November 22 and then twice per week on snow December-March.  Team BNS combines top-quality coaching with access to equipment, ski service, race support and team discounts.  It's a fun way to dramatically improve fitness, technique and overall enjoyment of the sport.

Fall RollerskiingWeekly workouts include technique coaching in small groups, in-depth video analysis and information on topics including training, racing, waxing, and many others. The program is an excellent way to rapidly develop technique and fitness while learning about all aspects of the sport.  The consistent supervision of expert coaches provides athletes with the tools needed to reach goals in the sport, whether that be to win a national championship or simply enjoy the sport by skiing with a fun group of people who share a similar passion.

The Group is designed for all levels of skiers - from novice to top racer - and will combine significant technique work with training preparation.  We have been known to have some fun as well.

Summer and fall training sessions include rollerskiing, running, road biking, mountain biking, strength training, intervals plus more.  Rollerskiing is not required.  Our on-snow program at Eldora will be exclusively on skis.

Ski Selection Updates
Fischer Skis Just Arrived, Race Stock Expected Oct 1
Flex Testing Skis
We just received the 120 pairs of RCS and Carbonlite that Nathan picked at Fischer in August and we have started the grind batch with the hand-selected skis for the people who placed orders over the summer.  The Fischer Race Stock skis Zach picked in Austria will be unpacked in New Hampshire September 14th and then shipped to us.  We expect to have those race stock skis in late September and will turn them around quickly.

Inventory at Fischer was excellent and we were able to pick all of the skis on our list with the exception of a few pairs of Zeroes and 902's.  We hope to get those skis in early October.
We also had an excellent trip to Ogden for Rossignol and Atomic selection and those skis have all been stone ground and shipped.
We are planning ski picking trips to Fischer in early October, and to Rossignol and Atomic in mid- to late- October.  Hit bouldernordicsport.com for more info on our ski selection process.
