Crested Butte Camp to have 10km+ Groomed
Snow Report and Photos
· Crested Butte, Colorado June 5-8, 2008 · Snow Farm, New Zealand July 20-Aug 1 and Aug 4-14, 2008 · Snow Mountain Ranch, Colorado November 28-30, 2008 · Mora, Sweden (Vasaloppet) February 24-March 2, 2009
Jesse Crandall sent us the following photo and report on Memorial Day. The camp starts Thursday, June 5.
Monday morning was sunny. Temps overnight got into the upper 20's in the high country and the crust cruising was excellent. Things started to get a little slow around 9:30 due to the fresh snow that had fallen over the past couple of days. The trailhead picture where we started skiing is 3.5 miles up a good road from Crested Butte! It is sure great to still be skiing this close to town.
The 3-6 foot base will provide for some excellent skiing for weeks to come and we'll start Bombardier tiller grooming next Tuesday. We expect to have a large 10km loop groomed with lots of good cutoffs and terrain for working on technique. |

Crust Skiing Trip Wed, May 28 |

Brainard Lake Area is the Best in Years Crust skiing is one of our favorite spring activities at BNS. Once the snowpack goes through enough freeze/thaw cycles to turn to corn, it freezes overnight and creates a hard surface that supports skating anywhere you want to go. With an early wake-up call and normal skating gear, vast alpine areas become skiing playgrounds.
The crust skiing at Brainard Lake is unbelievably good due to late snows that have kept the top layer of snow clean and smooth. Boulder Nordic will be leading an informal crust cruise on Wednesday morning to tour one of the best local areas for spring skiing.
Check bouldernordic.com for the last minute update Wednesday morning. The weather forecast looks perfect, but we will check a high-altitude weather station and post the decision to go or not on the front page of the web site by 5AM Wednesday morning. If it does not get cold enough overnight, we will go back to bed, but this is unlikely.
The tour will begin at 5:30AM (sharp!) at the parking lot of the Bustop on North Broadway (just North of Lee Hill Rd). We will meet there to carpool up to Brainard Lake (approx 45min drive). From the Red Rock Parking Area (10,080 feet), we'll load up our skis in packs and ride bikes about 10 minutes (2 miles) to Brainard Lake (10,300ft) where there is complete snow coverage. We'll then ski up from Brainard Lake past Long Lake and explore up to timberline. We will be back at the cars by 8AM and should be back in Boulder before 9AM.
Hope to see you out there!
Equipment to Bring:
- Skating Skis, Boots, Poles. You can use good skis, but rock skis are best due to the likelihood that we will break equipment doing stupid tricks in wind-formed half-pipes or running across short stretches of exposed tundra. It is easy to take skis off and avoid these sections, but more fun not to have to worry.
- Pack to carry Skis, Boots, Poles, dry clothes, water.
- Bike - MTB is best, but it is a paved road with a few snowbanks to cross, so anything should work.
- Bike shoes, Helmet
- Skiing clothes. We generally have a light skiing layer underneath a jacket and overpants. The temperature usually rises quickly, but we are going to high altitude where wind, snow and cold are possible/likely.
- Dry Clothes
- Water
- Food for after skiing
